Mumbai gains green light for new airport

NEW DELHI, 23 November 2010 – India gave a green light on Monday for the construction of a second international airport in the commercial capital Mumbai which had been blocked for a decade.
“Today, formally the environmental clearance has been given to the Navi Mumbai Project,” Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told a press conference in New Delhi.

NEW DELHI, 29 September 2010 – A full-page advertisement of the Tourism Ministry published on Monday in leading newspapers came under attack from India’s Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, who objected to an illustration of an African-origin elephant instead of the native Indian species, the Economic Times reported.
Sources in the ministry said Mr Ramesh wrote to Tourism Minister, Selja Kumari, to register his protest against what he called a “bloomer”.
India to rebuild ancient university

NEW DELHI, 13 September, 2010 – Indian academics have long dreamt of resurrecting Nalanda University, one of the world’s oldest seats of learning which has lain in ruins for 800 years since being razed by foreign invaders.
Now the chance of intellectual life returning to Nalanda has come one step closer after the parliament in New Delhi last month passed a bill approving plans to re-build the campus as a symbol of India’s global ambitions.
Historians believe that the university, in the eastern state of Bihar, once catered for 10,000 students and scholars from across Asia, studying subjects ranging from science and philosophy to literature and mathematics.

BANGKOK, 6 August 2010 ― Train travel options to India’s Buddhist sites were promoted to travel agencies, earlier this week, by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.
The railway marketing company also introduced its local partner, Nisco Travel, which is the general sales agency for Thailand.
Rail packages focused on Buddhist pilgrimage trail that is popular from November through to March.

Years of promoting pilgrimage routes begin to pay off for Indiatourism.
Indiatourism believes it can increase Thai visits by 20 to 25% by promoting its Buddhist Pilgrimage sites in northern India.
The national tourist office announced its latest initiatives during a presentation to Thai travel agents earlier this week. Read more
