Music festival at Karon

PHUKET, 21 December 2011: Tourism Authority of Thailand is promoting a music festival, Phuket Electronic Music and Dance Festival on Karon Beach in Phuket 30 to 31 December.

The event is a partnership between TAT, the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce and Karon Municipality.

Karon Municipality mayor, Tawee Thongcham said the two-day event should attract 100,000 visitors. Read more

Hotel boom continues on Phuket

PHUKET, 20 December 2011: The Office of Commercial Affairs Phuket reports a double digit growth in hotel developments registered on the island during the first 10 months of the year.

The report suggests another 24 hotels will open by 2014 ranging in size from 40 to 150 room units.

According to the report, there were 25 newly registered hotels in Phuket from January to October up 13.63% on the previous year.

Bangkok show goes to Phuket

PHUKET, 9 December 2011: Phuket will gain a new attraction with the opening of Siam Niramit Phuket, due to open at the southern island resort in time for the New Year holiday season.

A soft opening is scheduled for the new theatre, 15 December and if that goes well the theme park will fully operational for the New Year.

“The show will be identical to Siam Niramit in Bangkok,” said Siam Niramit Phuket director of sales, Supreecha Suthamanon. “But in addition to national culture we will add performances showing Andaman lifestyle.” Read more

TAT supports Phuket show

BANGKOK, 24 November 2011: Around 320 travel agents are expected to attend the Andaman Travel Trade fair in Phuket that opens this Friday.

The annual event will continue over the weekend targeting both trade and consumers visitors.

Hosted at the island’s Rajabhat University the fair focuses on tourism products in Phuket, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun provinces. Read more

Phuket travel chief knocks advisories

BANGKOK, 23 November 2011: Travel warnings on Thailand’s flood should be lifted or reduced as the situation is now returning to normal Phuket Tourist Association president, Somboon Jirayus claimed Tuesday.

But his call is unlikely to be heeded by more than 30 countries that are currently warning citizens to avoid Bangkok and nearby provinces.

The warnings cite inconvenience, limited road access out of the capital, public health issues and a possible shortage of drinking water and even medicine. Read more

Building tourism beyond Phuket

BANGKOK, 19 October 2011 – Five Andaman coast tourism associations will launch a joint marketing campaign to build length of stay.

Co-operating in the venture are provincial associations from Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Trang and Ranong. They will mainly target inbound travel agencies.

According to Krabi Tourism Association president, Ittirit Kinglek, the campaign will target mainly European and Scandinavians markets to build length of stay. Read more

Phuket immigration on overtime

PHUKET, 18 October 2011 – Immigration officers will work longer shifts during the high season to speed up airport services and reduce passenger queues at check-in and immigration.

According to a report in Phuket News , immigration officers at Phuket International Airport are due to start 12 hour-shifts this November, instead of the usual eight hours.

According to Phuket International Airport superintendent police general, Theerayuth Budnampeth, each shift will have 17 to 20 officers in the arrival hall and 13 officers in the departure hall. Read more

Phuket looks for heritage status

PHUKET, 11 October 2011 – Phuket hopes it can convince the International Council on Monuments and Sites to consider awarding heritage status to old Phuket town during its 15 to 17 October annual conference.

ICOMOS hosts the conference this week at the Phuket Merlin Hotel and local authorities hope to use the event as a platform to push for heritage recognition for the Phuket’s old town district that has Sino-Portuguese style buildings.

The event will attract 200 delegates from 115 member countries.

Seminar on saving Phuket’s sea

PHUKET, 7 October 2011 – Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket office will hold a green event called “Save Nature @ Phuket” to raise awareness about marine conservation, 28 to 30 October.

Phuket News, reported Thursday that the seminars on the environment will be scheduled at the Phuket Aquarium on Cape Panwa followed with a reef clean-up and a music concert.

TAT is partnering with the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and the Thailand Diving Association to host the three-day event which will also include discussions with members of the scuba diving community on ways to safeguard the island’s marine environment. Read more

Phuket hit by floods

PHUKET, 6 October 2011 –   Floods and heavy rain storms closed roads on Phuket Island this week around the popular beach destinations of Patong, Chalong and in  Phuket City, according to a report on the news website Phuketwan.

Near Phuket town floods were waist deep on Chao Fa Road West, near the HomePro shopping complex. Conditions were described as hazardous for motorists driving to popular west coast beaches, but heavy storm also hit Phang Nga and Krabi provinces on the mainland facing Phuket Island causing traffic jams on the main highways.
