CHIANG MAI, 3 October 2011 – Chiang Mai Tourism Association estimates flood damage will cost tourism and hotel operators as much as Bt300 million in repairs and lost revenue.
Association president, Sarawut Saeteaw, said the River Ping overflowed its banks and inundated the inner district of the town, flooding the Night Bazaar, Chang Klan Road and Ton Lamyai and Warorot markets.
“Around 10 hotels in the Nigh Bazaar area including tourism shops were flooded and the repair bill could be as high as Bt1 billion when including the loss of goods and damage to commerce.” Read more
Spiceroads opens CNX office

BANGKOK, 26 September 2011 – Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association sells packages to both domestic and international tourists for the second international horticulture expo known as the Royal Flora Ratchaphreuk.
The flower show opens at the start of the cool season in North Thailand, 9 November and continues through to New Year to 15 February 2012.

BANGKOK, 21 September 2011 – Now in its second year, Chiang Mai’s international horticulture expo known as the Royal Flora Ratchaphreuk is partnering with Thai Airways International, Thaiticket Major and Total Reservations to sell packages to both domestic and international tourists.

Dogs threaten Chiang Mai prospects

CHIANG MAI, 20 September 2011- Stray dogs are a menace to tourism a private organisation Chiang Mai Animal Welfare Centre claims in a petition that calls on the provincial government to take action.
The centre director, Sanya Sukrasorn, said it had received complaints that stray dogs posed a danger to both residents and tourists in down town areas of the famous tourism town particularly near the governor’s offices.
“If the provincial government ignores the problem, stray dogs it will damage the city’s long-term goal to become a world-class tourist destination,” Mr Sanya warned. Read more
Convention centre needs more cash

BANGKOK, 18 August 2011 – A mega project to give Chiang Mai a Bt1.8 billion convention centre should open to the public in April 2012, but it still needs another Bt764 million in cash from the government to complete all the facilities.
The latest data released 31 July shows 70.20% of the construction has been completed which puts it slightly ahead of schedule.
The actual convention building is now 69.50% complete while the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Centre 75.20% complete and landscaping 67.53%. Read more
Flora ticket sale launch set

BANGKOK, 28 July 2011 – Advance ticket sales for the Chiang Mai’s international horticulture expo known as the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek will open 8 August for a four-month period.
The actual event gets underway 9 November and will remain open until 15 February 2012.
A single pass for the flower show is priced at Bt100 for adults and Bt50 for children. Multi-entry passes cost Bt400 for adults and Bt200 for children, while a group pass for 15 to 50 people costs Bt70 for adults and Bt30 for children. Read more

Advanced tickets go on sale, 7 July to 31 October, with a single pass priced at Bt100 for adults and Bt50 for children. Multi entry passes cost Bt400 for adults and Bt200 for children, while a group pass for 15 to 50 people costs Bt70 for adults and Bt30 for children.

TAT packages Zoo attractions

CHIANG MAI, 24 June 2011 – Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Chiang Mai office launches an overnight package tour to three zoo attractions and a garden priced at Bt999 for Thais and Bt1,299 for foreigners.
TAT Chiang Mai office director, Chalermsak Suranan, said low-priced packages would encourage both Thai and foreign families to visit Chiang Mai during the low season and also act as advance publicity for the 4th Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 9 November 2011 to 15 February 2012.
A check with the TAT’s marketing department confirmed price differences between packages sold to Thais and foreigners reflected the zoo’s dual pricing policy that charges a higher entrance fee for foreigners.
The package includes a visit to Chiang Mai Zoo with stops at the panda enclosure, the aquarium, a pre-opening tram ride around the Royal Expo garden and dinner with a tram ride to the Chiang Mai Night Safari. The price also includes hotel accommodation with three meals.

BANGKOK, 9 June 2011 -The Greater Mekong Subregion countries have selected Chiang Mai for a pilot project to promote green tourism in the region.
Chiang Mai governor, Panadda Disakul, said on Monday that GMS countries view Chiang Mai as the ideal destination to be the region’s first green tourist city to expand sustainable tourism concepts.
Although Chiang Mai is famous for natural sites and has 700 years of history, it still lags behind in conservation and environment issues, according to Mr Panadda.
