AirAsia shines at World Travel Awards

PHU QUOC, Vietnam, 12 December 2017 – AirAsia has been named the World’s Leading Low-Cost Airline for the fifth year in a row at the 2017 World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final.

AirAsia emerged top in the category having received the highest votes from travel professionals and industry players from around the world, beating Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, Ryanair, easyJet, Jetstar Airways, Norwegian Air, West Air, flydubai, Air Arabia, flynas, kulula, Mango and fastjet.

Asia’s largest low-cost carrier by passengers also won the inaugural World’s Leading Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew award, ahead of the same 13 budget airlines. The win builds on AirAsia’s success earlier this year when it secured WTA’s first ever Asia’s Leading Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew award. Read more

Malaysia showcase in Hat Yai

HAT YAI 7 December 2017: Tourism Malaysia hosted the Malaysia Travel Showcase 2017 (IMTS 2017) Travel Fair last weekend at southern town’s Central Festival shopping mall.

The event positioned Malaysia as the ultimate destination for food, tourism, resorts, theme parks and cultural attractions all close to towns in South Thailand.

AirAsia adds more flights to Kuching

SEPANG, 6 December 2017: AirAsia is all set to inaugurate a daily flight from Kuching to Shenzhen, China, over the Christmas holiday.

Special fares are on offer for the flight that starts 26 December, or “Boxing Day”, an official holiday following Christmas celebrations..

The new route marks the third international route from Kuching and the third new route launched from Kuching International Airport, this year, after Pontianak and Langkawi. Read more

Fernandes prods Mavcom on KLIA2 tax rise

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 December 2017: Travellers boarding flights at KLIA2 will pay a higher passenger service charge, effective, 1 January, when the tax increases from MYR50 to MYR73.

The tax adjustment prompted founder and CEO of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, to tweet “can anyone explain the KLIA2 second service hike?”

He probably doesn’t need the explanation, but his tweet hints of a broad dissatisfaction with authorities that are imposing higher taxes on air travel. Read more

Biker tours roar to Penang

SADAO, 4 December 2017: Tourism Malaysia gave bikers a celebrity send off to promote Southern Thai Packages to Malaysia specifically for motor bike enthusiasts with the aim of increasing overland travel to Malaysia.

Leading the send off,  Tourism Malaysia deputy director general (promotion),  YBHG Dato’ Sri Abdul Khani Daud and director international promotion (ASEAN), Syed Yahya Syed Othman, waved off  tour participants  who biked  from Hat Yai, Thailand to Penang, Malaysia.

Thailand-Malaysia cooperation in tourism is being emphasised this year to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Read more

Langkawi beach hosts music festival

Langkawi will play host to an inaugural music event this December; the Langkawi International Island Music Festival 2017.

To be hosted  Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 December, the event features both local and international bands.

AirAsia raises flights to Johor Bahru

SENAI, 29 November 2017 – AirAsia celebrated, Tuesday, the launch of two international inaugural flights to Johor Bahru’s Senai International Airport, from Macau and Kolkata, India.

The daily direct flights from Macau and the five weekly direct flights from Kolkata are the fourth and fifth new routes launched by the airline to serve the southern Malaysia hub this year.

The earlier launches  were  Johor Bahru-Jakarta, Johor Bahru-Kuala Terengganu and Johor Bahru-Langkawi. Read more

Langkawi hosts Miss Tourism contestants

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 November 2017: Malaysia is hosting the Miss Tourism International World Final for the 20th consecutive year, with contestants spotlighting the attractions of Langkawi Island during a three-day visit.

The annual event was first hosted in Kuching, Sarawak in 1994 and has earned the support of Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism and Tourism to make it a signature event in the country’s tourism calendar.

The 20th Miss Tourism International 2017 World Final is underway this week and will conclude 7 December, with the coronation night held on 6 December at the ballroom of the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Kuala Lumpur. Read more

Truly Asia a defining moment

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 November 2017: Malaysia’s Truly Asia campaign successfully presented Malaysia as a multi-cultural and racial destination for the first time, Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism and Culture, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, told CNN on the sidelines of the recent World Travel Market in London.

In an interview with Richard Quest, CNN International’s anchor and journalist,  the minister said: “Through the Malaysia Truly Asia campaign, we have shown that we are a nation of multi- culture, multi-lingual, multi-racial. It has helped us as a society to become moderate people.”

The one-on-one interview also touched on competition between ASEAN member nations to attract more tourists. Read more

Mercure says hello to KK

KOTA KINABALU, 21 November 2017: The 310-room Mercure opened for business last week in Sabah’s state capital Kota Kinabalu.

The city is best known as the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Mount Kinabalu, the fifth highest peak in Southeast Asia.
