BANGKOK, 5 July 2010 – Tourism New Zealand will partner with Thai Airways International in a digital media marketing campaign to promote activities in New Zealand.

TNZ regional manager India and Southeast Asia, Kira Namblar said: “There is a change in our operations in Southeast Asia. We will focus on digital media and soft promotion on our website.”

JNTO revamps Thai website

BANGKOK, 2 Jul 2010 – Japan National Tourism Organisation, Bangkok Office has revamped its Thai website http://www.yokosojapan.org to emphasise information for individual travellers rather than groups.

According to JNTO Bangkok, the website hits dropped 20% in 2009 to 1,351,177 hits and the agency concluded a remake was in order to focus on individual travellers.

TCEB counts the cost

Thailand’s event business has lost about Bt3,000 million  in revenue this year and will lose at least 73,000 international event delegates by the end of the year due to security issues and the recent red-shirt protests.

According to TCEB, last year there were 628,000 event travellers generating Bt45,000 million revenue. In the first quarter of this year, TCEB estimated the figure would increase by 25% to reach 700,000 travellers, but instead it was hit by a record decline.

Road to recovery plans

BANGKOK 30 June, 2010 – Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau gained a Bt40 million budget from the Cabinet, last week,  and will revise its roadmap for the events industry to adopt later this year.

The bureau’s had earlier asked for Bt200 million, but was awarded just Bt40 million with the provision that it is used the funds by the 30 September, when the current fiscal year ends.

Emergency decree for safety’s sake

BANGKOK 29 June, 2010 – Thailand’s travel industry will have to live with the emergency decree for the foreseeable future, as there are no signs of it being lifted, according to Ministry of Tourism and Sports permanent secretary, Arttachai Burakamkovit.

Talking to ATTA members last week he said the ministry was working on rebuilding confidence, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would attempt to reduce the number of travel advisories.

New destinations for UK market

BANGKOK 29 June, 2010 – Tourism Authority of Thailand will promote  lesser known regions in Thailand such as the Northeast and the eastern seaboard in the UK market.

To balance the southern region’s popularity in European markets, TAT intends to experiment by promoting the Northeast region known as Isan and lesser known beach destinations on the eastern seaboard in a move to support government policy to spread the benefits of  investment and tourism.

Agents want flexible top-up

BANGKOK 25 June, 2010 – IATA’s decision to cancel a pre-paid option in its Billing and Settlement Plan, later this year, has prompted local ticketing agents to offer an alternative proposal to address the  financial risk to airlines.

The Thai Travel Agents Association says it will recommend a flexible pre-paid transaction that could be processed through a bank’s credit control to temporary increase the bank guarantee when sales exceed the ceiling.
