Codeshares expand Finnair’s Asian footprint

-

HELSINKI, 12 June 2018:Finnair has completed a codeshare deal with Hong Kong-based Cathay Dragon, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific a oneworld alliance airline.

The  codeshare will give the Finnish airline four new Asian destinations that it can sell using Cathay Dragon flights from its Hong Kong base.

Also a member of the oneworld alliance, Finnair can now sell fares under the codeshare agreement to Hanoi and Danang in Vietnam, Yangon in Myanmar, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia.

The same deal gives Finnair customers the option of a flight on Cathay Pacific to Kuala Lumpur from Hong Kong.

Finnair currently offers 10 weekly flights between Helsinki and Hong Kong and will introduce additional frequency during the winter timetable starting this October using an Airbus A350-900.

Last year, Finnair gained additional over-flight rights from the Russian government, which gives it the right to operate 80 weekly flights to Asia on the shortest trans-Siberian air route.

Despite the advantage of flying the shortest route between Helsinki and Hong Kong, the codeshare flight to Myanmar using  a Cathay Dragon flight requires a three-hour backtrack westward.

For that service it would be more feasible to fly Finnair to Bangkok and use a different codeshare partner for the one-hour hop to Yangon.

Finnair has added new flights to Nanjing (China) and will increase frequencies to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Delhi and Phuket for the winter season.
