Vietnam on track to hit 2018 target

-

HANOI, 15 May 2018: Vietnam welcomed an estimated 1,341,913 international visitors in April up 25.2% over the same month last year.

For the first four months of the year tourist arrivals reached 5,547,314 up by a massive 29.5% over the same four months in 2017, according to Vietnam’s Government Statistics Office.

Based on the four-month performance, January to April, the country is on track to hit this year’s target of 15.5 million visits, possibly surpassing the target by as much as 500,000 visits.

In 2017, Vietnam welcomed 12.9 million visitors an improvement of 29.1% on the 2016 performance.

Over the long-term, arrivals statistics continue to show Asian markets dominating supply and this could lead to problems if certain market such as China and South Korea suffer set backs.

Like other ASEAN destinations the over reliance on China, at the expense of other markets, is not a healthy trend.

Asia’s outbound travel markets for the first four months supplied 4,434, 507 tourist arrivals to Vietnam, an increase of 26.3%.

China was the top supplier with 1,776,024 arrivals up by astounding 39.7%.

South Korea in second place was no slouch either, delivering 1,173,847 travellers  and up 67.3%.

Third placed Japan supplied 279,416 visits, up 7% and Taiwan in fourth place supplied 227,416 visits, up 14.3%.

In fifth place, Malaysia delivered 177,597 with an increase of 16.3%, a statistic that competitor Myanmar should note with concern. Vietnam opened the visa-free travel door for Malaysian citizens and this is now driving growth, while Myanmar and Malaysia remain the last ASEAN nations that have not signed off on bilateral visa-free travel.

Vietnam second largest regional market after Asia is Europe that supplied 843,440 visits during the first four months of this year an increase of 12.9%.

The growth is mainly attributed to the increase in direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to cities in Europe and new services offered by Middle East airlines. They offer competitive fares on flights that make a stop in their home base hubs of Dubai and Doha.
