India sets out travel targets

-

NEW DELHI: India’s tourism ministry believes it can double tourist arrivals to 20 million over the next three years.

In 2017, the country topped 10 million visits an increase of 15.7%, but overall the country’s tourism underperforms when compared with its Asian neighbours.

Tourism Ministe KJ Alphons, in an interview with India’s Economic Times, said the ministry was considering long-term visas and adding more flights to popular tourist destinations.

India’s longest stay visa is for just 60 days, but the minister is pushing for visas valid for five to 10 years that would benefit investors or retirees.

The country already has multiple-entry visas and an e-visa service that has become a popular option for tourists who find it inconvenient to apply at an embassy or consulate.

In 2017 earnings from tourism reached USD 27 billion and within 10 years, at present global growth rates averaging 5%, the country could earn USD 100 billion from tourism.

If the country can expand air connectivity from international markets especially in Asia and open up destinations that have so far been restricted to international visitors, the ministry believes the 100 million arrivals target  is achievable within 10 years.

Restrictions on travel permits would need to be lifted for Arunachai Pradesh, Sikkim and Lakshadweep.
