Cheapest airlines to fly

-

BANGKOK, 22 May 2018: Indonesia and Thailand are the leaders in the ASEAN region for buying cheap airlines, according a Global Flight Price Ranking presented by Rome2rio, a travel planning website.

Worldwide, the lowest fares in US dollar per kilometre are to be found in Chile at 0.11 and the highest in Nepal at 1.13 dollars per km.

Indonesia’s airlines are selling at an average of 0.13 per km and Thailand at 0.15, making them the cheapest spots to pick up cheap fares in Southeast Asia.

At the other end of the scale Myanmar is the most expensive with its airlines selling fares at an average of 0.50 US dollar per km followed by airlines in Cambodia  at 0.44 and the Philippines at 0.41 per km.

Malaysia’s airlines sell at 0.21 and Vietnam’s airlines at an average of 0.20 US dollar per km.

The website’s assessment confirmed what we all suspected. Myanmar’s airlines are over charging when compared with neighbouring Thailand and Malaysia.  The airlines surcharge foreigners who book domestic flights by more than double what citizens pay for the same flight.

Singapore Brunei and Laos, the remaining three member countries of ASEAN, were not included in the Rome2Rio country  ranking.

However, in its international airline ranking Singapore Airlines had a score of 0.11, Scoot 0.12 and Silk Air 0.21 without any explanation as to why the premier airline’s fares were lower than what the group’s low-cost and leisure airlines scored.

The travel planning website says its 2018 edition highlights the cheapest airlines in the world for cost per kilometre.

”Our data science team analysed economy-class fares displayed by Rome2rio over a two month period, totalling some 1.5 million price points, to provide a snapshot of global pricing (in $ per km) across international and domestic carriers,” Rome2rio said.

“We wanted to get a sense of the world’s most affordable airlines and the cheapest or  most expensive countries to travel in right now.”

Heading the top 50 airlines, both domestic and international, Australia’s Tiger Air sells the cheapest fares at  USD 0.06 per km. But AirAsia X (0.07) Air India Express (0.08) Indonesia Air Asia  (0.08) and India’s Indigo (0.10) are also in the top slots.

From just an international perspective, when Rome2rio measured the top 200 airlines by average USD price per kilometre on international flight searches, it found Asian and Indian carriers dominated the top of the list, with Air Asia X taking top spot, followed by Air India Express and Indonesia AirAsia.

In contrast, Singapore Airlines’ low-cost Scoot dropped dramatically from being the cheapest at 0.07 in the 2016 ranking to 31st at 0.12 in the 2018 chart, possibly due to the merger of Tiger into Scoot and the spin-off of Tiger Air in Australia.

Rome2rio noted that its analysis “was intended to be a conversation starter, not a definitive statement on pricing trends or a given airline’s place in any particular pecking order”.

“The cost of a flight depends on many factors, including how close the booking is made to the time of travel and the popularity of the route,” it said.
