Phnom Penh transport options improve

-

PHNOM PENH, 17 April 2018; Cambodia took an important step forward with its public transport last week with new ferry and rail links.

The Airport rail link gained the most publicity in local media as the service embarked on its first week of services.

The airport rail link will operate almost around the clock with departures every 20 to 30 minutes from the downtown station on Monivong Boulevard.

The trip to the airport takes 45 minutes and until 31 July the service is free.

Last week also saw a ferry service start from Tonle Sap  to Takhmao passing through Phnom Penh and another train service rolled out on its inaugural from Poipet on the border with Thailand to Serei Saphoan in Banteay Meanchey province.

Royal Railways operates all rail services in Cambodia including the line to Sihanoukville a port town on Gulf of Thailand.

The Ministry of Transport posted a photo of the new airport train on its Facebook page  that was subsequently made available to the media.

Royal Railway is part of the Royal Group conglomerate, owned by the powerful business tycoon Kith Meng.

The ferry service should be popular with travellers exploring Phnom Penh and waterways from Tonle Sap. It takes passengers along the Tonle Sap and Tonle Bassac rivers, making three stops in Phnom Penh and then turning around in Kandal province’s Takhmao City.

Currently in its trial phase, transport is free until the end of July.
