PHNOM PENH, 24 April 2018: VINCI Airports which operates three airports in Cambodia, reported  3 million passengers used the airports in the first quarter of 2018, up 26.1% year-on-year.

In its first quarter report for all of its airports worldwide. Vinci said passenger traffic at Phnom Penh airport increased 34.5%.

The capital’s airport handled 1.4 millions passengers, while the increase was mainly attributed to new services introduced by Malindo, Vietjet and Shenzhen Airlines.

Chinese carriers such as Spring, China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines all increased services to Phnom Penh.

In addition, local start-up airlines, JC International and Lanmei Airlines, both established flights to Singapore and Bangkok.

Passenger traffic at Siem Reap airport increased by 17.4%. Travellers from China topped the passenger lists, while domestic travel also expanded.

VINCI in its first quarter report made no reference to Sihanoukville airport’s performance. Its website fielded information from 2017 when the airport was recommissioned and the first international routes were established.

In 2016 VINCI Airports completed the renovation of the terminal building and extended capacity by 80%, from 2,700 sqm to 4,800 sqm, to cater to 500,000 passenger per year.

It handled in 338.000 passengers in 2017 up 115% compared with 2016. Four airlines served the airport: Air Asia; Cambodia Angkor Air; JC Airlines and Sky Angkor Air.

Ministry of Tourism data shows international travellers visiting the kingdom reached 5.6 million in 2017, up 11.8%.

Cambodia should welcome 6.1 million international visitors this year, while the ministry last January said that by 2020 tourist arrivals would reach 7 million.

Meanwhile VINCI reported that its three Cambodian airports passed carbon reduction programmes within the framework of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) introduced in 2009.

Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap airports all renewed their Level 1 certification last March in a programme that is supposed to monitor an airports performance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
