YANGON, 31 August 2017: Myanmar’s third annual MyWorld Kalaw Trail Run has opened for registration.
The event, featuring a trail half-marathon (21km) and a 12 km trail run, will offer scenic races through beautiful forests surrounding Kalaw, a hilltop-town 30 km from Inle Lake.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, December 10, 2017.
Established in 2016 the race is now in its third edition and clearly established on the regional calendar of distinctive fun events in Asia.
“Fun runners and first-time entrants are encouraged to join the 12km distance, which will be challenging, but achievable for beginners to the sport of trail running” said, Yangon Running Club member, Marlo Perry.
The local association is supporting the event, which should attract 500 participants including international competitors from across the region.
The local community of Kalaw is also supporting the event with hotels offering discount rates for runners and groups.
Lonely Planet tell us “the hill-top town was founded by British civil servants fleeing the heat of the plains. The town still feels like a high-altitude holiday resort: the air is cool, the atmosphere is calm, the streets are tree-lined, and the surrounding hills are the only place in Myanmar where travellers can trek overnight without prior permission.”
Go Myanmar a popular tour operator calls the town Myanmar’s “trekking mecca” and offers practical tips on how to get to the race venue.
Flights arrive from Yangon, Tachikeik and Mandalay at Heho airport, 26 km south east of Kalaw. The journey from Heho to Kalaw takes around one hour by taxi and costs K45,000; you may be able to save money by booking your taxi in advance through your hotel.
“There is a currency exchange and Visa and Mastercard ATM facilities at Heho airport, although they are not always open.”
