Agoda hints on cheap travel

BANGKOK, 19 June 2017: An report attempts to cast light on when and where we should travel to get the hottest room deals. claims its latest Travel Smart study has the answers.

Pulling booking data from millions of guests, who used in 2016, the study checked pricing and booking trends that would indicate the best time to book and the best destinations for a good deal.

For holidays in Europe, the cheapest time to book is at the beginning of the year.

Destinations in Asia are the cheapest between June and November.

May and September proved to be the most expensive periods for room bookings, worldwide, but that trend did not apply to some Asian destinations like Bangkok.

“As one of the world’s largest online travel accommodation booking sites, we have a strong inventory of over 1.3 million properties combined with unrivaled traveller insights and destination expertise. We want to ensure our guests book the perfect room for the best value all year round across Asia and beyond,” said John Brown, Chief Operating Officer of

So how much can we save by booking at the right time?

Rooms in Amsterdam, Oslo and Berlin are more than 20% cheaper in January mainly due to the severe cold and winter weather conditions that deter leisure travellers.

Later in the year, the variations can be stark.

For example a visit to Berlin in January, could be 70% cheaper than in September. But the latter is one of the best months to visit Berlin.

By starting end-of-the-year holidays a little earlier, there are deals in cities like Barcelona and Paris in November and December, despite the global average prices peaking at this time.

It will cost on average 22% less than the annual average to book Barcelona to experience Christmas festivities like the Fira de Santa Llúcia and Fira de Sagrada Família.

In Asia, rates are around 16% cheaper in June and September in countries like Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan.

Shopaholics should consider travelling to Hong Kong, June and September, as accommodation is around 14% cheaper.

Worldwide, the most expensive month for rooms is May, when 88% of markets studied had higher-than-average room rates. While most destinations experience a peak in May, rooms in Hong Kong and Sydney are seen to be cheaper than average.

And though September is considered high season in many destinations, costs are lower in Dubai.

The study looked at booking data for 2016, but certain annual holidays, such as Chinese New Year and Ramadan, and events like the Milan Furniture Fair take place on different dates each year, which will affect rates.
