BANGKOK, 28 April 2017: Thai workers will enjoy a holiday on Labour Day on Monday 1 May.

Labour Day was adopted to give workers an opportunity to take a break, although Thailand’s workers arrive at this holiday already refreshed by a five to seven-day break during the annual Songkran Festival in mid-April.

Labour Day is observed in more than 80 countries, worldwide. Read more

United settles with dragged Dao

CHICAGO, 28 April 2017: United Airlines set out to repair its image, Thursday, reaching an undisclosed settlement with the dragged passenger at the centre of a worldwide uproar and promising to refocus on customer service.

David Dao, the passenger left bloodied by the 9 April  incident captured on video and widely shared on social media, reached an “amicable settlement” with United, his lawyers announced.

Under the terms of the deal, the amount of the settlement will remain confidential. Read more

BA dumps passengers at military base

LISBON, 27 April 2017: British Airways offloaded a couple from a London to Jamaica flight at a Portuguese air force base, Wednesday, after a row broke out over their demands for an upgrade to business class, military officials said.

“The pilot decided to land in Lajes in the island of Terceira because of a dispute between cabin crew and a couple.

They wanted to be transferred from economy class to first class,” an air force spokesman told AFP. Read more

Taiwanese trekker rescued in Nepal

KATHMANDU, 27 April 2017: Rescuers on Wednesday found two Taiwanese trekkers who went missing in a remote mountainous part of Nepal seven weeks ago, but only one survived the ordeal.

Liu Chen-chun, 19,​ died just three days before the rescue team located the couple in northwest Nepal, but her boyfriend managed to survive despite running out of food.

Liang Sheng-yueh, 21, is being treated in hospital in Kathmandu where he was airlifted after being rescued from the steep slope where the couple had been trapped for over a month. Read more

Two Asian airlines figure on on-time list

BANGKOK, 27 April 2017: Two Southeast Asian airlines figured in the latest OAG On-Time Performance Star Rating.

Representing the region’s best efforts at flying on-time Tigerair Singapore and Jetstar Asia both achieved a four-star rating and appeared in the OAG top 20 list.

In the airports category also based on-time performance, Japan’s Tokushima and Kōchi airports achieved a five-star rating, making the Japanese airports amongst the highest for global punctuality. Read more

THAI creates more codeshare options

BANGKOK, 27 April 2017: Thai Airways International has added more codeshare flights through its subsidiary airline Thai Smile.

The announcement comes on the heels of extensive codeshare agreement signed with Bangkok Airways earlier this month. Thai Smile’s management probably complained that it stood to lose business on competitive routes  served by privately owned Bangkok Airways if it didn’t have its own codeshares in place with TG.

However, passengers can only benefit from a wider choice of codeshare flights that allows them to make seamless connections at gateway airports with more convenient connecting times on either Bangkok Airways or Thai Smile. Read more

Hue offers restrooms for free

THUA THIEN-HUE, 27 April 2017: More than 50 public organisations, restaurants and cafés in Hue are offering “Free WC” services for local residents and tourists.

Local media reported the Hue administration and  provincial departments of investment and culture have also opened toilets in their buildings for free public use.

The province’s tourism department director, Phan Thien Dinh, was quoted saying the call for free restrooms has been enthusiastically supported by local residents. Read more

Cambodia enjoys tourism boom

PHNOM PENH, 27 April 2017: Cambodia’s tourist arrivals improved 12.1% during January to February this year, according to the Statistics and Tourist Information Department.

Released by the Ministry of Tourism, Wednesday, the latest data showed the country welcomed 1,025,522 international travellers compared to 914,554 during the same period last year.

Outbound trips by Cambodians reached 245,016 up 9.2% for the first two months of the year, compared with 224,411 trips during the same period in 2016. Read more

Taiwan extends visa free for Thais

BANGKOK, 27 April 2017: Good news for Thai travellers as Taiwan decides to extend visa-free visits for Thai passport holders for another year until the end of July 2018.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of China (Taiwan), the visa exemption that was offered to nationals of Thailand and Brunei will now be extended to 31 July, 2018.

It was due to expire 31 July this year. Read more
