China hosts adventure travel mart

BANGKOK, 8 March 2017: Adventure travel worldwide is forecast to grow at a rate of 46% between 2016 and 2020, according to the Global Adventure Tourism Market Report 2016 to 2020.

It is just one of many insights into the lucrative adventure travel market that delegates will glean at this year’s PATA Adventure Conference and Travel Mart, hosted in Luoyang, China, 1 to 4 April.

Organised and sponsored by the China National Tourism Administration and Henan Provincial People’s Government, the PATA event will run side-by-side with the Luoyang Adventure Tourism and Equipment Expo.

This year’s theme is “Create, Connect, Conserve”.

While adventure tourism has previously been seen as a small niche of the overall tourism market, the market is now valued at USD263 billion, growing by an estimated 65% between 2009 and 2012.

The sharp acceleration in adventure travel causes concern that not enough is being done to conserve and protect areas that are fast becoming popular with adventure travellers.

The PATA event consists of a one-day trade mart and two-day consumer show followed by one-day conference. It brings together a broad cross-section of travel and tourism industry professionals keen to enhance their knowledge, brand and business in adventure travel.

The mart offers pre-matched appointments between buyers (approved and pre-qualified) and sellers, providing a platform for networking.

Previous events have been hosted in Bhutan, Nepal and Thailand.

Last year it was hosted in the far north town of Chiang Rai province in Thailand that borders Laos and Myanmar.
