CEB’s net income soars

MANILA, 31 March 2017: Cebu Pacific Air posted a net income of PHP9.8 Billion in 2016, up 122% year-on-year, on the back of the strong demand for low-cost air travel and robust growth in ancillary revenues.

Total revenue, which includes CEB cargo services and wholly-owned subsidiary Cebgo, jumped 9.6% to PHP61.9 billion, as passenger revenues surged 9.2% to PHP46.6 billion. For the full year, CEB flew 19.1 million passengers, up 4.1% versus the 18.4 million passengers carried in 2015.

“2016 was a great year for CEB as we continue …to fly to more destinations around the Philippines and to key destinations in Asia, the Middle East, Australia and the US,” said Cebu Pacific vice president for corporate affairs Atty JR Mantaring. “CEB remains committed to further increase inter-island connectivity within the Philippines.” Read more

Airport takeaway: Plus 300% minus 5%

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Thai Smile is offering passengers a 5% discount on food and beverages at participating restaurants at Suvarnabhumi Airport until the end of December this year.

The response to this kind of travel deal will probably be “so what” as Suvarnabhumi Airport’s restaurant prices are grossly inflated causing a constant flow of complaints on social media from Thai travellers.

Offering 5% off when prices are double or even triple what the identical restaurants charges in a luxury shopping mall in downtown Bangkok is often described as a rip-off and a disgrace. Read more

Phongsali optimistic about tourism

PHONGSALI, 31 March 2017: Phongsali tourism authorities count visits and conclude tourism is moving forward, although the province is located in a remote part of Laos with limited airline access.

Vientiane Times in a tourism report noted that tourist arrivals to the province have risen from around 82,000 visits in 2015 to 103,583 in 2016.

The province’s tourism section official, Khamphanh Soudaphone, was quoted saying the province was not on a popular tourist route, but still managed to attract European visitors looking for soft adventure. Read more

HCMC develops cultural village

HO CHI MINH CITY, 31 March 2017: Ho Chi Minh City authorities have decided to go ahead and build the Sai Gon Cultural and Tourism Village to attract more locals and foreign visitors.

Vietnam Net Bridges reported that city authorities have approved a plan to develop the attractions at a site in the Tan Thang Sports Complex and a residential area in Son Ky Ward of Tan Phu District.

Sai Gon Cultural and Tourism Village, will feature the cultural diversity of north, central and south Vietnam. Read more

Tripfez founder face of the future

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Co-Founder and CEO of a travel booking engine for Muslim travellers, Faeez Fadhlillah, was named the 2017 PATA Face of the Future on Thursday.

Based in Malaysia, he and his co partner, Juergen Gallistl, founded Tripfez in 2013, but the travel portal’s big moment came when it won  USD750,000 in seed funding in May last year to expand he business.

Today it has over 200,000 properties on its site, worldwide, of which 20,000 are “Salam Standard certified”. Read more

Vichit wins ATTA election

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Vichit Prakobgosol was elected the 37th president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents for a two-year term (2017 to 2018) in a landslide victory at the annual general meeting, Thursday.

Vichit won the election with 395 votes from a total of 480 registered members, while the only other candidate, incumbent president Charoen Wangananont, garnered just 79 votes. It was a stunning loss and a first for an ATTA president running for a second term. There were six void ballots.

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Thai hoteliers should tap research and booking trends reported by online travel agencies to help them improve market share and build new business.

That’s the advice from Expedia, an online travel agency that believes its booking data would help hotels using its online booking channels to work smart.

Expedia group’s Thaiand market management director, Pimpawee Nopakitgumjorn, said understanding the travel patterns of visitors will assist Thai hoteliers to better target and capture incremental demand throughout the year. Read more

Luang Prabang packed out

VIENTIANE, 31 March 2017: Luang Prabng province claims it will welcome 500,000 domestic and overseas tourists during the Lao Lunar New Year celebrated mid-April, according to the official Laos News Agency (KPL).

If the forecast is accurate the tiny World Heritage town will be swamped with tourists; hotels will be turning guests away.

Restaurants will not be able to cope and the small three parallel streets that make up the inner district will gridlocked; cars and motor cycles bumper- to-bumper. Read more

Thailand’s Q1 tourism looks bright

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Thailand estimates revenue from its booming tourism industry increased by 4% during the past six months.

Quoting figures based on data covering October 2016 through to 27 March, this year, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports claimed tourism generated THB1.33 trillion in revenue.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul told a briefing, earlier this week, that foreign tourists generated revenue of THB860 billion with the balance earned from domestic tourism. Read more
