Thai airports close 2016 ahead

BANGKOK, 30 January 2017: Airports of Thailand reports strong increases in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic at the six airports under its management during December last year.

AoT reported, late last week, that all of its supervised airports served 11,273,057

Passenger traffic was up 8.88% from 10,353,665, when compared with the same month in 2015. Read more

Ferry service fare falls

PATTAYA, 30 January 2017: Rough seas and unseasonal storms put a damper on the new ferry service between Pattaya and Hua Him prompting the company to cut fares effective 1 February to THB999 one-way.

Launched in early January it serves two popular resorts that face each other directly across the Gulf of Thailand.  So far, very few passengers have booked the service, partly due trips being suspended due to bad weather and a fare of THB1,250 per person.

Even now there are no guarantees a low-fare will work for the ferry as  passengers must visit the pier office at either Pattaya, or Hua Hin, to buy a ticket. Read more

Jetstar adds Hong Kong link

DANANG, 30 January 2017: Jetstar Pacific will launch a new route between the central city of Danang and Hong Kong starting 27 March.

Local media reported the airline will start the route with three flights weekly on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday using an Airbus A320s aircraft.

Flights from Danang will depart at 1010 and arrive in Hong Kong at 1255. The return flights will depart Hong Kong at 1405 and arrive in Danang at 1450. All times are local. Read more

AirAsia expands role in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, 30 January 2017: AirAsia, the Malaysia-based low-cost airline, will soon have an office in Cambodia to serve expansion.

Agence Kampuchea Presse reported the airline CEO, Anthony Fernandes said AirAsia will open an operations office in Cambodia in the near future.

“An AirAsia’s office will contribute to Cambodia’s human resource training, transport service and civil aviation development,” the CEO told the news service. Read more

No need to trigger Article 44

BANGKOK, 30 January 2017: The Thai government will not trigger a clause in Article 44 of the interim constitution to fast-track the Rolls-Royce bribery investigation that may implicate former executives of Thai Airways International.

According to a National News Bureau of Thailand report the government will allow normal legal procedures to take their course.

In response to the criticism that the investigation into alleged bribery by Britain’s Rolls-Royce involving THAI has not made much progress, government spokesperson, Lt Gen Sunsern Kaewkumnerd, said the government understood well that the scandal put a spotlight on the government, but it also recognised that it was important to respect and strictly adhere to standard legal procedures. SureStay makes headway in Asia

PHOENIX, ARIZONA, 30 January 2017: Best Western Hotels & Resorts is advancing its ‘white label’ franchise model, SureStay Hotel Group, globally with its first Asian property in Bangkok, Thailand.

The brand has approved 30 hotels in North America and one in Bangkok, Thailand and is projecting to open 100 hotels by the end of 2017.

The white label business model is expected to take off in a big way in Asia where many hotel owners of midscale properties still prefer to run their own properties carrying their own identification and branding. Read more

Delta’s domestic system down

WASHINGTON, 30 January 2016: Delta Air Lines, one of the largest US carriers, temporarily grounded its domestic flights in the United States on Sunday over a computer glitch that did not impact planes already in the air.

“Delta teams are expeditiously working to fix a systems outage that has resulted in departure delays for flights on the ground,” the Atlanta, Georgia-based airline said in a statement.

“Flights in the air remain unaffected. Delta apologises to customers for the inconvenience.” Read more

Chinese lost in Malaysia shipwreck

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 January 2017: Three Chinese passengers died and five are missing after a tourist boat sank in rough seas off eastern Malaysia, officials confirmed late on Sunday, with 22 people rescued following the shipwreck.

Twenty Chinese tourists and two of the vessel’s three crew members were rescued and sent to a hospital in Kota Kinabalu after the boat sank off Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island, according to Malaysian officials.

The third crew member has not yet been found, bringing the total number of missing to six. Read more

MANILA, 30 January 2017: Eighty-six of the world’s most beautiful women will be vying for the Miss Universe crown Monday as the Philippines — last year’s winner — stages the beauty contest in a bid to boost tourism and investment.

Last year’s host, Emmy Award winner Steve Harvey — who shot to notoriety for initially announcing the wrong winner — returns for this year’s three-hour pageant that starts at 0800 (0000 GMT) in Manila.

Latin American beauties led by Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar and Miss Peru’s Valeria Piazza were the odds-on favourites for the crown according to online betting sites. Read more

Trump clampdown creates chaos

HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, 30 January 2017: Protests continue at US airports, following President Donald Trump’s order to suspend refugee arrivals and impose tough controls on travellers from seven mostly Muslim countries.

The visa-restricted countries are Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
