Etihad cuts fares 35%

BANGKOK, 29 November 2016: Etihad is offering promotional fares for travel to selected destinations in Europe and the United States until the end of December next year.

The promotion sells a roundtrip fare, inclusive of taxes and fuel surcharges, ex-Bangkok, starting at THB33,720 to Paris.

A THB34,185 fare is on offer to London and THB46,885 to Manchester in the UK. Read more

TCEB wins SITE bid

BANGKOK, 29 November 2016: Thailand will host for the first time the SITE Global Conference in January 2019.

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau president, Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, said TCEB recently won the bid to host the “SITE Global Conference 2019” – an annual association meeting of the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE), a global organisation dedicated to strengthening  the incentive travel industry.

“The event will help drive more MICE business to Thailand and accommodate the needs of MICE professionals joining the event from around the world.” Read more

KAL ditches Siem Reap

SIEM REAP, 29 November 2016: Korean Air will suspend the Incheon-Siem Reap route from early February next year due to its failure to attract enough passengers.

According to the airline’s statement, Korean Air will suspend two routes, next February, due to low demand and pressure on profitability.

“From early February, Korean Air will suspend the Incheon -Siem Reap route and from late February the Incheon-Jeddah (via Riyadh) route,” it read. Read more

HCMC improves services for disabled

HO CHI MINH CITY, 29 November 2016: Ho Chi Minh City authorities will add around 300 new low-floor buses to its existing fleet in a bid to provide better services for disabled passengers.

Local media reported the project will improve public transport for the disabled.

The city’s Department of Transportation deputy head, Le Hoang Minh, said the city was one of the first in the country to offer people with disabilities free bus transport. Read more

Bali hotel profits shrink

BALI, 29 November 2016: This year’s surge in visitor arrivals to Bali is continuing and while the Chinese are the second largest international source of business, inroads are being made in a number of other markets, reports C9 Hotelworks managing director  Bill Barnett.

In the villa rental groups two source markets, India and the Middle East, are gaining momentum.

Occupancy has improved, but rates are under stress, while Bali’s high inflation in costs of labour and utilities has caused the bottom line profit to shrink. Read more

US airlines resume Cuba flights

HAVANA, 29 November 2016: US airlines resumed direct flights to Havana on Monday, a sign of the changing times just as the Cuban capital held a tearful memorial for late revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

After setting off from Miami with a water cannon salute, an American Airlines flight touched down at Jose Marti international airport at 0845 (1345 GMT).

It was the first time in more than 50 years a US airline provided regular commercial service to Havana. Read more

Australia agrees on backpackers tax

SYDNEY, 29 November 2016: Foreigners in Australia on working holidays face paying a 15% levy on every dollar they earn after the government Monday compromised on a controversial “backpacker tax”, dumping plans for a higher rate.

Canberra had initially sought a revenue-raising 32.5% tax for seasonal workers from 1 January under a proposal first flagged in the 2015 budget, but the move was met with an outcry from farmers and tourism operators.

They feared it would deter tourists from choosing the country as a destination, with some 600,000 backpackers heading to Australia every year, many finding work picking fruit. Read more
