Vietnam readies for e-visas

HANOI, 30 November 2016: Vietnam’s National Assembly has recently approved a resolution on a pilot project that will offer electronic visas for foreigners starting from 1 February next year.

Saigon Times media reported to be eligible for an e-visa, the applicant must be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Vietnam and poses no threat to the nation’s security and social order.

E-visas are emerging as an important tool for immigration bureaus as they allow officials to control who is allowed to enter, while making the application process convenient for travellers. Read more

Thailand’s October arrivals rise 11%

BANGKOK, 30 November 2016: Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports reports international visits exceeded 27.07 million, an improvement of 11.27% during January to October this year.

Released Tuesday, the ministry’s data showed the country attracted 27,076,308 international visits during the first 10 months of this year, compared to 24,332,817 visits during the same period last year.

The data is based on foreign passport, or ID holders, passing through international checkpoints (land, sea and air). Read more

Laos upgrades airport

VIENTIANE, 30 November 2016: A terminal expansion project at Wattaya International Airport should be completed by 2018.

Project supervisor, Sengsangoun Chanthavong, said the project under the Official Development Assistance of the Japan was worth 7.5 billion yen (over USD60 million).

The project began in December, last year and is now due for completion in June 2018, he said. Read more

SINGAPORE, 30 November 2016: A new survey on the state of the meetings industry suggests delegates are looking for teambuilding activities and intend to combine business events with time-out to enjoy a travel experience.

US-based Destination Hotels, a collection of upscale independent hotels, resorts and residences now part of Two Roads Hospitality, released key findings in its fifth annual “State of the Meetings Industry” survey, Wednesday.

Based on responses from 400 corporate, association, government and independent planners, the survey concluded that Millennials were keen to join more team building events. Read more

UK urged to resume Egypt flights

MADRID, 30 November 2016: Both the World Travel & Tourism Council and the World Tourism Organisation have called on the UK government to lift the current ban on UK-based airlines flying to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt.

In a letter to Prime Minister, Theresa May, WTTC president and CEO, David Scowsill and UNWTO secretary general, Taleb Rifai, stressed the importance of resuming operations to the Egyptian coastal resort.

Their statement claimed the current travel advisory was having a devastating impact on the country’s economy and social stability. Read more

BANGKOK, 30 November 2016: Three winners of the YAANA Venture Operation Smile Charity Fight Night won adventure holidays at the fundraising event late last week in Bangkok.

Fight Night is an annual charity boxing match, silent auction and raffle that raises money to give free operations to children in rural Thai provinces to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.

Football mourns plane crash

LA UNIÓN, COLOMBIA, 30 November 2016: The football world mourned, Tuesday, after a plane carrying a Brazilian team crashed in the mountains in Colombia, killing 71 people, but miraculously leaving six survivors, officials said.

Football legends Pele and Maradona as well as current superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo led tributes to the players of Chapecoense Real, a humble team whose march to glory was cut abruptly short.

Having risen only recently from obscurity, the team was on its way to play in the finals of the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s second-biggest club tournament, when disaster struck. Read more

Casino raid nabs Chinese

MANILA, 30 November 2016: More than 1,300 Chinese citizens have been arrested in the Philippines for working illegally at an unlicensed online gaming business, the immigration bureau said Tuesday.

China has expressed concern over the raid at a casino-hotel complex in the northern Philippines and said Manila must guarantee “humanitarian treatment” of those being held.

Some 1,318 people were detained during the raid, 24 November, in Angeles city, immigration bureau spokeswoman Maria Antoinette Mangrobang told AFP. Read more
