Bank reconsiders China tally

BANGKOK, 30 September 2016: Kasikorn Research Centre says Thailand remains a top destination for Chinese travellers despite the zero dollar controversy.

The bank forecasts 9 million visits, this year, which is a million below the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ forecast of 10 million trips this year.

The bank’s think-tank unit conducted a survey interviewing 400 Chinese travellers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, 15 August to 15 September, to assess market trends. Read more

THAI flies to Iran

BANGKOK, 30 September 2016: Thai Airways International launches its newest destination, Tehran, the capital of Iran, at a VIP launch 1 October.

The airline will offer a nonstop four-weekly service between Bangkok and Tehran.

Airline president and CEO, Charamporn Jotikasthira, said the service to Tehran would introduce a city with abundance of culture and traditions often called the Pride of Persia. Read more

NokScoot cuts Osaka fares

Bookings must be secured by 9 October.

Luang Prabang travel spikes

LUANG PRABANG, 30 September 2016: Luang Prabang’s Information, Culture and Tourism Division says tourist arrivals, both locals and foreigners, are estimated to increase by 16% this year.

Lao News Agency quoted the provincial tourism division head, Soulithip Norkhounphoun, saying the steady increases in tourist arrivals has prompted a substantial expansion in rooms and facilities.

“Many new hotels have opened and there is a vast improvement in infrastructure due to stronger investor interest,” he said. Read more

Dalat plans amusement park

LAM DONG, 30 September 2016: Lam Dong People’s Committee has recently received a proposal for an amusement park and adventure sports centre in Dalat, the province’s capital city.

Local media reported that Dalattourist Company is planning to build an amusement park and adventure sports centre in the central highlands resort city of Dalat with an investment of around USD14 million.

The site will be located at the Datanla Waterfall Eco-Tourism Area on  99 ha of land. Construction will begin late this year and be completed by 2020, the report said. Read more

The Mark wins marks with Lao restaurants

LUANG PRABANG, 30 September 2016: The Mark Luang Prabang is refining its process to reach a growing number of Lao-operated restaurants wanting to enroll in the international food safety and hygiene certification programme.

When Lanith Luang Prabang director, Chounlachan Phengdy, who manages The Mark, joined the programme in June, she discovered several Lao business owners and managers, previously uninterested in The Mark, wanted to participate.

“They now understand The Mark is not just an award to put on their counters, but it represents a procedure that follows international standards on how to operate a kitchen and cook safe food for the guests,” she said. Read more

Global tourism grows 4%

MADRID, 30 September 2016: International tourist arrivals, worldwide, grew by 4% between January and June, a year-on-year comparison with Asia-Pacific leading growth markets.

Destinations worldwide received 561 million international tourists (overnight visits), 21 million more than in 2015, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.

Asia and the Pacific demonstrated renewed strength this first half of 2016, receiving 9% more international arrivals, the highest growth across world regions. Read more

Airlines ready to reduce emissions

MONTREAL, 30 September 2016: After years of delays and failures, the airline industry began this week complex negotiations to implement a scheme to reduce its carbon footprint.

Although the aviation sector was exempted from the December 2015 Paris accord on reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to global warming, aviation officials are mindful of the need to curb the sector’s growing CO2 emissions.

Climate change topped the agenda at the opening of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)’s triennial meeting earlier this week. Read more

Air Berlin lops 1,200 jobs

BERLIN, 30 September 2016: Struggling Air Berlin, Germany’s second-largest airline, announced, Wednesday, a major restructuring plan that shrinks its fleet and cuts 1,200 jobs.

In a statement, the loss-making company said it planned to “concentrate its core operations as a dedicated, focused network carrier serving higher-yielding markets, from its two key hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf”.

Air Berlin said it would provide up to 40 Airbus 320 aircraft to rival Lufthansa, the leading German carrier. It would operate up to 38 of the planes under a six-year agreement beginning in 2017. Read more
