KHON KAEN, 31 August 2016: The 2016 Mekong Forum opened yesterday in Khon Kaen province, attracting a record turnout of officials from government and private organisation interested in developing trade within the Greater Mekong Subregion.
Mekong Institute executive director, Watcharas Leelawath, chaired the opening session attended by development officers, policymakers, social enterprises, and academics.
Participants identified success stories in the GMS focusing on trade links, training programmes and infrastructure development.
The forum also featured a keynote address on “Sharing Responsibility for Common Prosperity” by former New Zealand Prime Minister Jim Bolger, as well as “Capturing the Growth in the Greater Mekong Subregion” by former Thai Energy Minister Narongchai Akrasanee.
Mekong Institute played a role at the Mekong Tourism Forum held in Sihanoukville during the first week of July.
The Mekong Institute executive director made a presentation at that event on top investment trends in the GMS that were relevant to tourism.
