WWF targets Asian tiger farms

GENEVA, 29 July 2016: The World Wildlife Fund, Thursday, called on Asian states to close their tiger farms to boost efforts against the black-market trade in animal parts.

The conservation group said there remained 200 tiger farms in Asia, mostly in China, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.

The tiger population in farms is about 8,000, more than the estimated 3,900 living in the wild, WWF said in a statement ahead of the 29 July International Day of the Tiger.  Read more

Passenger sits on food cart

MUMBAI, 29 July 2016: Indian budget airline IndiGo was forced to divert an international flight, Thursday, after an unruly passenger sat on the plane’s food cart before attacking another traveller, it said.

The morning flight from Dubai to Calicut, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, was diverted to Mumbai where the passenger was offloaded and handed over to police, IndiGo said in a statement.

“A little before landing, a passenger… started misbehaving with the crew. He jumped on the forward cart (which is used for food and on-board merchandise) and sat on it,” read the emailed statement. Read more

HCMC fines wayward travel firms

HO CHI MINH CITY, 28 July 2016: Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Tourism says more than 130 travel and hospitality firms were fined a total of USD89,300 for various violations.

Vietnam Net Bridge media quoted tourism chief inspector, Nguyen Van Kham, saying 33 travel agents, including four offering outbound tours, were hauled up for unlicensed operations and a failure to use qualified guides.

More than 100 hotels were fined for failing to reassess their star ratings and make an announcement about their operations and any change in their rating. Read more

The “Hello China for 2” promotion sells roundtrip fares, inclusive of surcharge and taxes, ex-Bangkok, starting at THB7,065 to Kunming and THB7,885 to Guangzhou. (Fare per person).

Cambodia gets tough on smoking

PHNOM PENH, 28 July 2016: Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism and relevant authorities will implement a smoke-free policy in the tourism sector to give the industry a cleaner and healthier image while promoting public health.

The tourism ministry will cooperate with the Ministry of Health, local authorities and partner organisations to introduce the campaign following a national workshop on the implementation a smoke-free policy in tourism, held last week.

Agence Kampuchea Presse said the smoke-free policy in tourism would improve the welfare of visitors and residents. Read more

Call to cull tiger shows

NEW YORK, 28 July 2016: In the wake of the recent scandal and closure of Thailand’s Tiger Temple, a World Animal Protection report claims there is evidence of widespread abuse of captive tigers at the hands of Thailand’s tiger tourism industry.

SilkAir and Lao Airlines ink codeshare

SINGAPORE, 28 July 2016: SilkAir has signed a codeshare agreement with Lao Airlines for its flights to Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

The agreement will provide SilkAir and Lao Airlines customers more options when travelling to and from Singapore and Laos.

From 31 October, SilkAir will offer three weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. With the new codeshare agreement in place, customers have a choice of six weekly flights to Laos shared between both airlines. Read more

Advisor appointed for high-speed rail project

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 July 2016: MyHSR Corporation Sdn Bhd (MyHSR) has selected CH2M as its technical advisor for the iconic cross-border Kuala Lumpur–Singapore high-speed railway.

Following the recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the project by both the Malaysian and Singaporean governments, MyHSR has now awarded its Technical Advisory Services tender to CH2M.

CH2M, with its sub-consultant PwC, will support MyHSR to develop the project, including working on the planning and design of the Malaysian section of the project, and assisting with the project management. Read more

Emirates’ A380s fly to Johannesburg

DUBAI, 28 July 2016: Emirates has announced that it will upgrade one of its four daily flights between Dubai and Johannesburg to an Airbus A380-800 effective 1 February 2017.

Emirates currently uses Boeing 777 aircraft for each of the four daily flights between the two cities, making it the busiest route in the airline’s African network with over 3 million passengers carried in the last five years.

Johannesburg will join more than 40 destinations in Emirates’ global network that is served by A380 aircraft. Read more
