Phuket heads water safety campaign

PHUKET, 29 June 2016: Thailand’s Ministry of Transport’s Marine Department has recently signed an agreement with relevant agencies in Phuket to embark on a campaign to improve water transport safety standards.

An agreement was signed, late last week in Phuket, to establish a water transport safety centre that will raise safety regulations to international standards, to revive tourist confidence.

Travel firms that book tourists on sightseeing cruises and ferry trips in South Thailand have faced scrutiny from their overseas business partners who are demanding stricter compliance with international safety standards. Read more

Lufthansa extends booking date

BANGKOK, 29 June 2016: Lufthansa extends  the booking window for its latest business class promotional fares from 4 July to 11 July for travel to selected destinations in Europe for flights up to 10 October this year.

The promotion sets a roundtrip fare at THB89,000, inclusive of taxes, fees and surcharges, ex-Bangkok to 15 destinations in Europe.

Destinations are: Paris; London; Budapest; Funchal; Florence; Geneva; Helsinki; Amsterdam; Luxemburg; Bergen; Liege; Palma De Mallorca; Prague; Salzburg and Reykjavik. Read more

AirAsia shifts to new terminal

YANGON, 29 June 2016: AirAsia Group has shifted its operations in Yangon, Myanmar, from Terminal 2 to the new Terminal 1 effective Tuesday 28 June.

According to the airline’s statement, passengers who are travelling on flights operated by Malaysia’s AirAsia (AK) and Thai AirAsia (FD) are advised to check-in at Terminal 1, which is within walking distance from the old terminal.

Passengers flying to and from Yangon will be informed by the airline of the change via email and SMS, it said. Read more

Danang welcomes Vegas style resort

DANANG, 29 June 2016: A new resort and entertainment complex is under construction in Danang that will widen the city’s appeal to regional tourists.

Thanh Nien News reported the complex will cost at an estimated USD490.6 million.

Inspired by Las Vegas, the famous casino city in the US, the 31-hectare Cocobay will have two hotels, a beach club, restaurants and indoor and outdoor theatres. Read more

STB suspends Deal Travel

SINGAPORE, 29 June 2016: Singapore Tourism Board suspended the licence of Deal Travel Pte Ltd (licence 02387), 4 June.

The announcement said the company would not be allowed to carry out the business of a travel agent until further notice.

However, it is required to fulfil contracted obligations to customers already booked prior to its suspension, but cannot accept new business. Read more

Foodies in for a ‘STREAT’ in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 29 June 2016: The 2016 edition of the annual Singapore Food Festival will take place 15 to 31 July, and feature a record line-up of 18 gastronomic experiences.

Themed “Savour the Past, Taste the Future”, this year’s festival will take foodies on a culinary journey including dining in a shophouse-lined street to the contemporary experience of an outdoor barbecue in a gastro-park.

Singapore Tourism Board, director of attractions, dining and retail, Ranita Sundra said: “The Singapore Food Festival has been carrying the torch for Singapore’s food legacy since 1994. After 23 years, it is still the only food festival in Singapore to feature local flavours and showcase the inventive spirit of our ever-evolving food scene.” Read more

SriLanka reduces Europe flights

COLOMBO, 29 June 2016: SriLankan will suspend flights to Frankfurt and Paris at the start of its winter timetable, effective 1 November.

The last flights to Europe will arrive in Frankfurt and Paris 30 October. After that, SriLankan will serve Europe through its codeshare partners Etihad and Qatar, through the Abu Dhabi and Doha gateways.

Passengers who have bought tickets for travel on the two routes with a departure on 1 November or later will be given the option of a refund or a transfer to a codeshare flight through the airline’s partners. Read more

Made in China flies

BEIJING, 29 June 2016: China’s homegrown regional jet made its first commercial flight, Tuesday, operator Chengdu Airlines said, after years of delays raised questions about the country’s ambitious plans for domestically-produced planes.

Chengdu Airlines flew the ARJ21 from its eponymous home base, the capital of the southwest province of Sichuan, to the commercial hub Shanghai carrying 70 passengers.

More than half were paying customers who were aware they were flying in a new plane, an airline spokesman told AFP. Read more

Sydney harbour casino ready 2021

SYDNEY, 29 June 2016: Australian mogul James Packer won approval Tuesday for a towering six-star hotel and casino complex on Sydney harbour aimed at Asian high-rollers, with work expected to begin shortly.

It is scheduled to open in 2021.

The New South Wales state government legislated to site the Crown Sydney Hotel Resort on foreshore land previously earmarked as public open space in 2013. Read more

US condemns Istanbul attack

ISTANBUL, 29 June 2016: The United States on Tuesday condemned what it called the “heinous” bombing and gun attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport that left at least 36 people dead, pledging “steadfast” support for Turkey.

“Ataturk International Airport, like Brussels Airport which was attacked earlier this year, is a symbol of international connections and the ties that bind us together,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement.

“We remain steadfast in our support for Turkey, our NATO ally and partner, along with all of our friends and allies around the world, as we continue to confront the threat of terrorism.” Read more
