VIENTIANE, 13 June 2016: India and Laos will soon launch direct flights as part of initiatives to increase cultural exchanges and bilateral trade between the two countries.
Lao News Agency quoted India’s ambassador to the Lao PDR, Ravi Shankar Aisola, saying direct flights between the two countries was in the final stages of approval and very soon there would be flights between India and Laos without the need to stop in a third country.
Routes and other details are being worked out in a bilateral aviation agreement, he said.
Lao PDR’s ambassador to India, Southan Sakonhninhom, said Indian investors would be encouraged to look at projects in the country, while Indian companies could use Laos as a gateway to gain access to ASEAN markets.
The main investment would be in the areas of power, tourism and agriculture.
According to Laos’ Tourism Development Department latest official data, 4,547 Indian tourists travelled to Laos in 2014decreasing of 0.09% from 4,551 in 2013.
