Laos and Japan mull air services


VIENTIANE, 30 May 2016: Laos and Japan have exchanged diplomatic documents in a follow up procedure linked to an Air Service Agreement between the two countries signed last year.

Vientiane Times reported the exchange of documents took place in Vientiane, last week, that should expand cooperation in aviation and lead to direct air services between Laos and Japan.

The exchange of documents follows the signing of the Air Service Agreement in Vientiane, last year, which commemorated the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and Japan.

inside no 3Japan is the 27th country to have signed such an air services agreement with Laos.

Currently there are no direct air services between the two countries.

Japanese tourist arrivals to Laos stand at about 30,000 visits a year, according to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism’s Department of Tourism Marketing. Around 4,000 Lao citizens travel to Japan annually.

In 2014, Japan began issuing multiple-entry visas valid for up to three years to Lao nationals, in a bid to improve business links and tourism between the two countries.
