BANGKOK, 31 May 2016: One of Thailand’s leading lights in tourism and aviation, ML Nandhika Varavarn, 59, died Friday, after a prolonged battle with cancer.

She was a key player in the marketing and communications team at Bangkok Airways 1989 to 1995, heading the public relations and advertising department.

After a short sabbatical in London she returned to the airline to take up the post of vice president for corporate communications, a role she held for 13 years up until her death. Read more

Thai AirAsia dumps fares

BANGKOK, 31 May 2016: Thai AirAsia is discounting fares for travel on selected domestic and international routes starting June until the end of September. Bookings must be made by 12 June.

The promotion starts with a one-way fare, inclusive of airport taxes, ex-Bangkok, at THB490 to Udon Thani.

A THB590 fare sells to Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani, Hat Yai, Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Read more

Vietnam sets up hotline

QUANG BINH, 31 May 2016: Quang Binh tourism authorities recently set up a hotline to improve communications and services for tourists.

Local media reported the hotline, which was officially started 19 May, includes two phone numbers, (052) 3833399 and (052) 3503399.

The Tourism Promotion Information Centre under the Quang Binh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will receive calls from tourists and provide them with support. Read more

Bhutan gains Myanmar air rights

THIMPHU, BHUTAN, 31 May 2016: With the revision of the air services agreement between Bhutan and Myanmar, airlines registered in Bhutan can  enjoy full traffic rights including the right to fly beyond Myanmar (fifth freedom).

Kuensel, Bhutan’s English national newspaper, reported the two countries signed the agreement in Thimphu last week.

The designated Bhutanese airlines will be able to fly to Yangon, or Mandalay, and then to Thailand, Singapore or Malaysia by exercising the fifth freedom rights written into the agreement. Read more

TCEB targets Indonesia

BANGKOK, 31 May 2016: Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau will pursue Indonesia’s exhibition delegates to boost trade show attendance in Thailand.

TCEB vice president, Supawan Teerarat, said Indonesia has high potential to boost attendance for Thailand’s trade exhibitions.

“We will work with the Thai Exhibition Association to assist Thai exhibition organisers to tap Indonesian industry associations to increase international exhibition delegates by another 15% the next year.” Read more

Emirates names Thailand manager

BANGKOK, 31 May 2016: Emirates has confirmed the appointment of Mohammad Sarhan as area manager for Thailand and Indochina.

He was assigned to the Thailand posting 1 May and has worked in the aviation industry for the last 10 years.

Prior to being appointed area manager Thailand and Indochina, he was Emirates’ country manager for Vietnam. Read more

They are dedicated travellers with three in four (79%) prioritising travel above any other expense, but are savvy bargain hunters with a penchant for luxuries.

Aviareps Malaysia and GATS merge

KUALA LUMPUR, 31 May 2016: Aviareps has strengthened its aviation general sales agent (GSA) capability in Malaysia with the merger of Aviareps Malaysia and prominent Malaysian GSA company Global Alliance Travel Services, (GATS).

The merger was signed by Aviareps chairman and chief executive officer, Michael Gaebler, and Global Alliance Travel Services managing director, Wilson Tay and company director, Lum Khee Fah.

It creates a new entity;  Aviareps Global Alliance Travel, which is responsible for all its aviation GSA client activities in Malaysia. Read more

Paris tourism suffers a dip

PARIS, 31 May 2016: Already suffering from the impact of last year’s jihadist attacks, tourism in Paris faces a fresh challenge from the recent wave of violent strikes and protests, tourism bosses warned Monday.

Hotel bookings by Japanese visitors were down 56% in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2015, while Russians were down by 35%, the city’s tourist board said.

Chinese tourists had been a major driver of growth last year — reaching a new record of 1.2 million — but their numbers had also dropped by 13.9%. Read more

Air France pilots vote to strike

PARIS, 31 May 2016: Air France pilots voted overwhelmingly, Monday, for what could be extended strike action in June, their union said, casting another shadow over France’s hosting of Euro 2016.

The SNPL, the main pilots’ union, told AFP its members had voted by 68% for a strike of more than six days in protest at cuts to their wages.

“There is bound to be action in June,” said Emmanuel Mistrali of SNPL Air France, without saying when. Read more
