Air Macau slashes fares

BANGKOK, 30 March 2016: Air Macau offers promotional fares for travel to Macau from April to the end of June this year.

The “Super Savings” promotion sets a roundtrip fare at THB4,900, inclusive of airport tax and fees, departing Bangkok to Macau.

Bookings and travel are open from 1 April to 30 June this year. The promotion is valid only on NX879, NX881 and NX886. Read more

HCMC to fight tourist crime

HO CHI MINH CITY, 30 March 2016: Ho Chi Minh City authorities will tighten safety and security measures to protect international visitor after reports that the city’s crime rate was on the rise.

Tuoi Tre News quoted the city’s district 1 police unit head, Nguyen Tan Dat, saying the district was the main centre of tourism in the city and this attracted opportunist petty thieves.

“Foreigners are the main victims …in the first three months of the year, there were 17 cases of theft and robbery in district 1, eight of which involved foreigners.” Read more

Cambodia travel improves

PHNOM PENH, 29 March 2016: Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered a slight increase of 1.2% in January, this year, according to the statistics and tourist Information Department.

Released by the Ministry of Tourism, Monday, the country registered 466,086 international travellers in the first month of the year compared to 460,577 visits during the same month last year.

Vietnam topped all supply markets with 70,435 visits but was down 8.2% from 76,707 during the same month in 2015. Read more

Learning from royal projects

BANGKOK, 30 March 2016: Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau joins hands with three partners to launch a campaign to attract more domestic MICE visitors to explore Royal Initiative Projects.

The three partners are Pid Thong Lang Phra (The Royal Initiative Discovery Foundation), Association of Domestic Travel and Thailand Incentive and Convention Association.

Speaking at the media launch, last Friday, TCEB president, Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, said the campaign marks three significant royal occasions  during 2016. Read more

Luxury travel sellers tour Thailand

BANGKOK, 30 March 2016: Tourism Authority of Thailand is hosting a familiarisation trip and trade networking events, this week, for 32 top travel agents and media specialising in the luxury travel market.

They are visiting Thailand’s top luxury tour destinations, until 3 April, with two trade networking events to help to build business.

The eight-day trip is covering luxury tourism products and services in Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai. Read more

Indians tie the knot in Thailand

BANGKOK, 30 March 2016: Thailand is forecasting strong growth in the lucrative Indian weddings market following an annual fam trip organised for wedding planners from major Indian cities.

TAT hosted 17 wedding planners from Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Bangalore for this year’s trip, which covered Bangkok, Phuket, Khao Lak, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin, Rayong and Pattaya. It was the third annual trip for wedding planners from this important market.

The week-long visit ended at the weekend with a symposium and table-top sales and business networking between the Indian wedding planners and 31 Thai hotels together with 23 wedding service and attractions keen to capture a slice of this important market. Read more

Taxi driver fined for fare scam

BANGKOK, 30 March 2016: Thailand’s Department of Land Transport fined a taxi driver THB3,000 and revoked his driving license for cheating a Swiss couple at Suvarnabhumi Airport, the National News Bureau of Thailand reported, Tuesday.

The taxi driver charged the Swiss couple THB6,000 for the trip from Suvarnabhuimi International Airport to a hotel in Sathorn Road area in downtown Bangkok.

The taxi driver was summoned by the Inspection Division of the Land Transport Department (DLT) to hear the charges and penalties. Read more

Anbang back with new offer

NEW YORK, 30 March 2016: Starwood Hotels & Resorts said, Monday, it was weighing an improved takeover bid from a group led by Chinese insurer Anbang that trumps its agreed deal with Marriott International.

In the latest turn in the bidding war for the US hotel operator, Starwood said the consortium led by Anbang Insurance gave a non-binding offer on Saturday of USD82.75 per share, an all-cash deal valued at USD14 billion.

That tops US firm Marriott’s improved bid, which the Starwood board is still recommending, Starwood said in a statement. Read more

Fight to save forests

JAKARTA, 30 March 2016: Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio has visited the Indonesian jungle to help protect a biodiverse area from deforestation.

Fresh from clinching his long-awaited first Oscar last month, DiCaprio spent the weekend in the Leuser ecosystem, on Indonesia’s main western island of Sumatra.

The actor, an ardent supporter of environmental causes, was pictured accompanied by local environmentalists and flanked by two critically endangered Sumatran elephants. Read more

Brussels airport may open Wednesday

BRUSSELS, 30 March 2016: Brussels Airport could “at best” resume very limited services on Wednesday, but it will take months to get back to normal after two suicide bombers destroyed the departure terminal, chief executive Arnaud Feist said.

The airport ran a series of tests Tuesday to see if makeshift check-in facilities were good enough to restart some flights and that repair work and new security measures were adequate after the deadly 22 March  attacks.

Feist told L’Echo in an interview published, Tuesday, that everything depends on the outcome of the tests at Zaventem, with some 800 airport staff going through the temporary facilities. Read more
