PG upgrades Luang Prabang airport service

LUANG PRABANG, 31 March 2016: Bangkok Airways has recently introduced a passenger lounge at Luang Prabang International Airport, Lao PDR.

According to the airline, the 132 sqm lounge can accommodate up to 42 passengers. The lounge is located near exit 3 on the 2nd floor of the international departure terminal.

All the airline’s passengers have access to the lounge that serves free snacks and hot or cold drinks, and has free Wi-Fi Internet access. Read more

Vietnam to approve another airline

HANOI, 31 March 2016: Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has sought government permission to allow Vietstar, a military-run aviation company, to start up passenger and cargo air services.

Thanh Nien News reported Vietstar Airlines plans to operate routes linking the main destinations in Vietnam, as well as routes to major cities in Southeast Asia and East Asia over the first five years, once it acquires  government approval.

The company currently provides charter flights, filming and rescue services. Read more

Korean Air cut Americas fares

BANGKOK, 31 March 2016: Korean Air is discounting fares for travel on selected routes to North America until the end of December.

The promotion offers roundtrip fares, inclusive of fuel surcharge and other carrier imposed fee and taxes, ex-Bangkok, starting at THB27,560 to Los Angeles and THB28,140 to San Francisco.

A THB30,680 fare is available to Honolulu, while a THB32,920 fare sells to New York. Read more

AirAsia adds Shantou link

BANGKOK, 31 March 2016: Thai AirAsia will inaugurate a daily direct flight linking Bangkok (DMK) to Shantou in China effective 27 May.

The carrier CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, said the new service will offer a convenient way for travellers to  to visit one of China’s prime destinations.

After the new service starts, Thai AirAsia, will operate more flights to China than any other Thailand-based airline; 13 destinations on 19 routes with 25 daily flights. Read more

Yaana stakes Grasshopper

BANGKOK, 31 March 2016: Newly-created Yaana Ventures, which invests in and manages travel and hospitality companies, has taken a stake in Grasshopper Adventures, a cycle tour specialist in Asia.

Yaana Ventures CEO, Willem Niemeijer, signed the agreement, last week, with Grasshopper director, Adam Platt-Hepworth.

Yaana Ventures is the rebranded Khiri Group that is now branching out into management and investment in travel ventures in the region. It is the holding company behind Khiri Travel. Read more

Smaller Euro cities attract Asians

SINGAPORE, 31 March 2016: Asian travellers may still love Paris and London, but the latest Travel Smart study shows bookings are growing much faster for smaller European cities.

The findings were announced Wednesday by Agoda, a leading accommodation booking website that is owned by Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group.

The study compared millions of hotel bookings made by Agoda travellers resident in Asia and booking travel to Europe in 2014 and 2015. Read more

Payback offer by Kingfisher tycoon

NEW DELHI, 31 March 2016: Debt-laden Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya has offered to pay back some of the estimated USD1.3 billion he owes in unpaid loans, lawyers told a New Delhi court Wednesday, in a case that has gripped the country.

The founder of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, who is being chased by a group of mostly state-run banks over the unpaid debts, left India earlier this month.

A lawyer for Kingfisher, C. S. Vaidyanathan, on Wednesday submitted a repayment plan to the Supreme Court proposing to give back 40 billion rupees (USD603 million) to banks by 30 September. Read more

Air New Zealand mulls Virgin sale

WELLINGTON, 31 March 2016: Air New Zealand announced it was considering selling its stake in Virgin Australia, Wednesday, saying it wanted to look at other uses for the capital it has tied up in the airline.

The Kiwi flag carrier is Virgin Australia’s largest shareholder, with a 25.89% stake worth about AUD343 million (USD262 million) built up as the airlines forged an alliance against trans-Tasman rival Qantas.

But Air NZ “does not want a large minority equity position in Virgin Australia as it focuses on its own growth opportunities”, chairman Tony Carter said in a statement to the New Zealand stock exchange. Read more

Brussels Airlines face crisis

BRUSSELS, 31 March 2016: Brussels Airlines, Belgium’s top carrier, said earlier this week it was facing its “biggest crisis” ever as last week’s airport bomb attacks cost it five million euros a day in lost business.

Two Islamic State suicide bombers blew themselves up at Zaventem airport, 22 March, with authorities warning it will take months to restore normal services although some flights were due to start Wednesday if tests of temporary facilities went well.

“We are going through the biggest crisis of our history,” Brussels Airlines spokeswoman Wenke Lemmes told AFP as the company waited anxiously for news from the airport. Read more

Turkey’s tourism dives

ISTANBUL, 31 March 2016: Visitor numbers to Turkey plunged by over 10% in February, the government said earlier this week, as tourism was hit by a crisis in relations with Russia and security fears after a series of attacks.

The number of foreigners entering Turkey fell 10.32% in February from the same period the year earlier, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in its latest monthly statistics.

Tourism from Russia recorded one of the biggest falls amid the crisis in relations following Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian war plane in November, with visitor numbers plunging over 51.5%. Read more
