TCT brainstorms ideas

BANGKOK, 26 February 2016: Tourism Council of Thailand brainstormed ideas at a Preparing Tourism Reformation and Tourism Cluster seminar, Tuesday, to create a council endorsed tourism strategy for 2017 to 2021.

TCT acting director, Apichart Intharapongpan, told TTR Weekly that the council’s new tourism strategy would require another eight brainstorming sessions with tourism associations and representatives before it can be formalised.

The entire process has to be completed by April, this year, he said. Read more

Bangkok Airways cuts fares

BANGKOK, 26 February 2016: Bangkok Airways launches “Stunning Summer Festival” fares for travel on its domestic and international routes effective 16 March.

The promotion is only available for bookings online at from 28 February to 2 March for travel after 16 March this year.

Travel agents are concerned that the fares undercut what they offer to their clients, but the airline argues it is promoting website bookings.

Ex-Bangkok, the offer starts at THB1,290 to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, Lampang, Trat and Krabi. Fare includes airport tax and fees. The Chiang Rai fare is not competitive when compared with Thai AirAsia that sells at THB990. Read more

Theme park closes in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH, 26 February 2016: Dreamland, Cambodia’s biggest amusement park, will close 1 March after the contact expires.

The amusement park posted on its facebook, Tuesday, that it was ending its business 1 March.

Phnom Penh Post said the park opened in 2011 on a 5-hectare plot of land opposite the NagaWorld casino. It was not a popular attraction with foreign tourists. Read more

Airport slated for Halong Bay

QUANG NINH, 26 February 2016: An airport near Halong Bay in Quang Ninh province will open late 2017 with a capacity to serve up to 2 million passengers a year.

Thanh Nien News quoted the province’s vice chairman, Nguyen Van Thanh, saying the project has been delayed for nearly a year due to a longer than expected feasibility study process.

With a cost estimated at USD331.7 million for its first phase, Quang Ninh Airport will be built on Van Don Island, about 50 km from Halong Bay. Read more

Myanmar hotel performance slips

LONDON, 26 February 2016: Hotels in Myanmar have seen performance slow with a decline of more than 11% in occupancy in January.

STR Global identified hotel trends in Myanmar as part of its January analysis of hotels in the Asia Pacific region.

The research company’s take on Myanmar showed hotel demand  had decreased year-on-year for 17 months, leading to continued drops in REVPAR. Read more

Minister cracks down on illegal travel firms

BANGKOK, 26 February 2016: Minister of Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, says she is combating illegal travel agencies using a special committee that is currently investigating companies.

According to a National News Bureau of Thailand report, Thursday, the minister said travel agencies that used Thai nationals as nominees damaged Thailand’s tourism business.

According to the law foreigners can own 49% of a company registered in Thailand. Read more

Air New Zealand reports profit

WELLINGTON, 26 February 2016: Air New Zealand unveiled a record interim net profit Thursday, saying falling fuel prices and surging passenger demand were also set to produce a strong full-year result.

The flag carrier said net profit for the six months to 31 December was NZD338 million (USD225 million), up 154% on the same period a year ago.

The result was more than double Air New Zealand’s previous half-year record of NZD140 million, posted in 2014, and chairman Tony Carter described it as a “stellar” outcome. Read more

Paris calms Chinese jitters

PARIS, 26 February 2016: A delegation representing China’s top 50 travel agencies began a three-day visit to France, Tuesday, aimed at calming their security concerns following the November attacks in Paris.

Among the delegation were representatives from around a dozen corporate travel agencies, the Paris regional tourism authority CRT said in a statement.

Visa applications have dropped off considerably this year because of Chinese jitters over security, it said. Read more

Myanmar backpedals on ban

YANGON, 26 February 2016: Myanmar has backpedalled on a ban on climbing temples at the tourist hot spot of Bagan, following fears visitors would no longer be able to enjoy the ancient capital’s famed sunsets.

The Ministry of Culture on Monday barred visitors from clambering over the monuments.

But by late Tuesday it had revised the order to let tourists ascend five of the largest pagodas — in a field of more than 3,000 Buddhist structures. Read more
