Thailand’s popularity across Asia drives tourism boom

BANGKOK, 28 January 2016: Powered by a surge in Asian tourists, Thailand’s visitor arrivals in 2015 hit an all-time record of 29.88 million (+20.44%) and generated around 1.44 trillion Baht, up 23.39% over 2014 in Thai tourism revenue.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor, Dr. Yuthasak Supasorn, said “It was another remarkable year in 2015. The performance endorses the scope and effectiveness of the 2015 Discover Thainess campaign and its success in restoring travel confidence.”

The latest data released by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, earlier this week, indicated 21,275,750 visitors, or a 71.20% market share, were sourced in Asia, which generated about 821 billion Baht in revenue. Read more

Competitive fares from EVA

BANGKOK, 28 January 2016: EVA Air sells an ‘Economy Advance Purchase Promotional’ fare for travel to selected destinations in Europe and North America.

Travel period runs from March until the end of September, this year, for Europe and until December this year for North America.

2015 turns positive for AoT

BANGKOK, 28 January 2016: Airports of Thailand closed 2015 on a positive note with both passenger traffic and aircraft movements up substantially at six airports under its management.

AoT reported, Tuesday, that its airports served 109,817,004 passengers up 21.31% from 90,528,345 in 2014.

Meanwhile, overall aircraft movements grew 16.60% from 624,169 to 727,750. Read more

UNESCO backs Bagan restoration

BAGAN, 28 January 2016: Ministry of Culture’s Archaeological Department says restoration of Bagan’s pagodas damaged in storms, last year, will be completed soon.

Global New Light of Myanmar reported the city gained emergency funding from UNESCO to the tune of USD30,000 for the restoration of temples that were damaged by November storms last year.

The Bagan Conservation Group and the Archaeological Department are joining forces to carry out restoration. Efforts will focus on ancient wall paintings inside the pagodas and on masonry according to the department deputy managing director, U Thein Lwin. Read more

HCMC airport tackles traffic

HO CHI MINH CITY, 28 January 2016: Cars and taxis parked for more than three minutes at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport will b liable for fines on the spot, or their vehicles will be towed away.

Authorities started their crackdown on parked vehicles at the airport’s terminal zone, Monday, in an effort to combat traffic congestion.

Vietnam News media quoted Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam deputy director, Vo Huy Cuong, saying strict measures were being applied to ease congestion especially during the Tet holiday next month. Read more

Amari spreads to Sri Lanka

BANGKOK, 28 January 2016: Construction of Amari Galle Sri Lanka is on schedule, with the resort on track to open in late this year.

It is a first for the Amari branded property in Sri Lanka, but the Thailand-based ONYX Hospitality Group already manages two other properties; OZO Colombo and OZO Kandy.

All three hotels are owned by Sino Lanka Hotels, under ONYX management. Read more

Vietjet expands its footprint

SINGAPORE, 28 January 2016: Vietjet closed 2015 with a revenue total growth of 205%, compared to 2014, with income reaching VND10.9 trillion (USD490.7 million).

Vietjet continued to build its fleet in 2015, receiving  11 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, an average of one new aircraft every month.

It carried more than 9.3 million passengers, an impressive increase of 66% compared with 2014. Read more

Scramble to contain MERS scare

BANGKOK, 28 January 2016: Thai health authorities have placed 33 people in quarantine after an Omani national seeking medical help in the kingdom tested positive for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The unnamed man, 71, arrived in Thailand late last week with a fever that doctors in Oman could not treat, Thai officials said.

His positive testing for the contagious disease sparked a scramble to locate anyone who might have been in contact with the man. Read more
