Thai AirAsia increases flights

HAT YAI, 29 January 2016: Thai AirAsia will add a flight on its Hat Yai-Chiang Mai route to give passengers the option of two flights daily starting 1 April.

The additional flight aims to serve growing travel demand between north and south destinations in Thailand.

It is a response to customer demand that called for more direct flights between northern and southern destinations to avoid the inconvenience travelling via Bangkok. Read more

Thailand almost hits 30 million

BANGKOK, 29 January 2016: Ministry of Tourism and Sports reports the country’s latest tourism figure showed international tourist arrivals posted an improvement of 20.44% during 2015.

Speaking at an Association of Thai Travel Agents and Thai Hotels Association meeting, Wednesday, Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, said the year closed with 29.8 million international tourists.

Earlier a preliminary assessment estimated 2015 would close with 28.6 million trips. Read more

HCMC tourism ambitions sky high

HO CHI MINH CITY, 29 January 2016: Ho Chi Minh City tourism officials are confident that southern city can attract 5.1 million international tourists and 21.8 million domestic tourists in 2016.

Reaching that target would give the city an estimated USD4.8 billion in revenue by the end of this year.

Local media quoted the municipal Department of Tourism deputy director, La Quoc Khanh, saying to reach the target, the city will focus on improving the quality of tourism products and services and opening up waterway tourism. Read more

BANGKOK, 29 January 2016: Seats that should be sold to genuine passengers travelling with Thai Smile are being sold to the owner’s of life-like dolls who insist on taking them on flights.

Thai Smile crew serve snacks to the dolls and insist they fasten their seat belts on take-off and landing.

Known in Thai as “luuk thep” (child angels), the pricey dolls, which can cost up to USD600, were first popularised by celebrities who claimed dressing up and feeding the dolls had brought them professional success. Read more

Changi: Year of two halves

SINGAPORE, 29 January 2016: Singapore Changi Airport delivered a record performance of 55.4 million passengers in 2015.

The region’s top gateway airport welcomed seven new airlines and nine new city links during the year. Airlines executed 346,330 landings and take-offs during a year that started with a sluggish performance in the first half and finished with robust returns during the last half.

STR Global: Thailand hotels fly

LONDON, 29 January 2016: Thailand’s hotel performance shined with 13% increases in occupancy and REVPAR in 2015, according to STR Global’s latest assessment.

In contrast, hotels in the Asia-Pacific region reported mostly flat year-end 2015 results.

Crackdown on safety lapses

SEOUL, 29 January 2016: South Korea on Thursday clamped down on lax safety protocols at low-cost airlines, warning them to mend their ways or face possible closure.

The transport ministry conducted a safety review of the country’s six budget carriers this month, after one aircraft was forced to make an emergency return due to an unsealed door.

The Boeing 737-800 belonged to Jin Air, a budget airline operated by South Korea’s top carrier Korean Air. Read more
