New terminal to boost U-Tapao Airport

BANGKOK, 30 October 2015: A new airport terminal scheduled to open in June next year will help U-Tapao Airport cope with growing passenger traffic.

Speaking at Association of Thai Travel Agents monthly meeting on Thursday, the airport director, Rr Adm Wasinsan Janthawarin, said the new terminal will ready in March and officially opened 1 June, next year.

“The airport will serve both military and commercial flights under the concept of One Airport Two Missions. The new facilities will give airlines an opportunity to add new services ahead of the 2016 peak season.”

THAI Smile slashes fares

The promotion sells one-way fares, inclusive of airport tax, fees and surcharges, ex-Don Mueang starting at THB1,090 to Khon Kaen, THB1,390 Chiang Mai, and THB1,490 Phuket. Read more

Oil slick worries Hua Hin

HUA HIN, 30 October 2015: Oil slicks made landfall, Thursday, polluting  the popular beach resort of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

Local officials told Thai PBS, a TV news channel, that the slicks swept ashore during Thursday and teams had been deployed to clean beaches.

Oil slicks are a major concern for the resort’s hotels. They rely heavily on tourism and this is now the peak season for travel.

SAN FRANCISCO, 30 October 2015: Predictions for the the upcoming holiday peak season suggest Singapore will be the top destination for Asia-Pacific travellers, Bangkok for Europeans, Madrid for Latin Americans and New York for North Americans.

In September, Thailand was back on the most searched destinations list worldwide, after an absence from the list in the second quarter of 2015.

The predictions were released by Sojern, a leading performance marketing platform for travel brands, in its Q3 Global Travel Insights report based on the analysis of more than a billion traveller intent data points across the globe.

Shake hands share heads

DUBLIN, 30 October 2015: A Dutch start-up Shake-On launches its smart bracelet at one of the world’s biggest technology exhibitions, next week,  that will attract 30,000 attendees.

It is the first event, worldwide, to use the smart bracelet, Shake-On, that allows visitors, exhibitors and organisers to pass contact information at the shake of the hands.

The information transfer is automatic between two people, wearing bracelets when they shake hands.

Nai Haan resort reopens early

PHUKET, 30 October 2015: The Nai Haan, a remake of the former Royal Phuket Yacht Club, has moved forward its opening date to 28 December, in time to catch New Year bookings.

The resort’s general manager, Frank Grassmann, confirmed a THB10,000 a night rate for the peak season until 16 January, when the original opening rate of THB8,000 will apply.

Attending ITB Asia, earlier this month, he said the handover of the hotel had been brought forward allowing it to accept bookings for New Year.

Lufthansa lifts forecasts

FRANKFURT, 30 October 2015: German airline Lufthansa said Thursday it was raising its full-year forecasts after low oil prices and positive passenger numbers lifted profits in the third quarter.

“The realignment of the Lufthansa group is now being reflected in good results. There is no question that the low oil price helped us to achieve these,” said chief executive Carsten Spohr.

“But our improved earnings rest on more than this alone. We recorded outstanding passenger volumes this summer and significantly improved load factors, too,” he boasted.

China orders A320s

BEIJING, 30 October 2015: China signed a contract to buy 100 A320 aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus on Thursday, a spokesman for the firm told AFP, worth USD9.7 billion at list prices.

The deal was signed as German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The European Union is China’s biggest trading partner and Merkel’s trip comes as European leaders jockey for trade and investment deals with the world’s second largest economy.
