HANOI, 1 October 2015: Hanoi People’s Committee established a Tourism Department, last week, taking over the responsibility from the nationwide Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The department is a specialised agency under the City’s People’s Committee. It is located at No 17 Dien Bien Phu street in Ba Dinh district.
Hanoi is following the lead of Ho Chi Minh City that reestablished its own tourist department, last October. It funded its own department of tourism, 1993 to 2008, before the office was merged with the nationwide Department of Tourism. The move to centralise tourism management was deemed a failure by tourism policy makers in the southern city.
Hanoi People’s Committee chairman, Nguyen The Thao, told local media that creating its own Department of Tourism would boost the management and development of tourist products.
The number of international tourists to Hanoi has increased by around 10% per year since 2010.
In 2014, Hanoi welcomed 15.4 million domestic trippers and over 3 million international arrivals.
Hanoi is the second city establishing Department of Tourism after Ho Chi Minh City.
