MICE forum launched at IT&CMA

BANGKOK, 3O September 2015: IT&CMA hosted the first-ever ASEAN MICE Forum on the sidelines of this regional B2B event that opened Tuesday at Bangkok CentralWorld Convention Centre.

Thailand supplied the bulk of the content at the forum with a line-up of over 20 MICE, events intelligence, corporate travel and association management knowledge sessions led by over 30 speakers.

The first-ever ASEAN MICE Forum was endorsed by the ASEAN Marketing and Communications Working Group.

China site competes with Airbnb

BEIJING, 30 September 2015: HNA Tourism Group announced, earlier this week, it will invest 500 million yuan (USD78M) in Zhubaijia.com, an overseas housing rental site for travellers similar to Airbnb.

The investment will initially focus on building web content in the house and apartment rental sector and providing the technology support to search and secure villa rental bookings at all the main tourist destinations in Asia.

Eventually it will mirror and compete head-on with Airbnb targeting exclusively in the Chinese market.

Thai AirAsia expands U-Tapao hub

PATTAYA, 30 September 2015: Thai AirAsia will launch three new routes direct from U-Tapao Airport to Macau, Singapore and Udon Thani starting 27 November this year.

The airline CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, said U-Tapao is now the airline’s fifth base that will help the airline to draw travellers particularly Chinese to Thailand’s eastern seaboard.

“The new routes will operate with daily flights to Macau, Singapore and Udon Thani…there is a potential and opportunity to draw travel and investment to the eastern region.”

Etihad slashes fares

BANGKOK, 30 September 2015: Etihad Airways offers promotional fares for travel from Thailand to selected destinations in Europe, until 13 December, this year. Bookings must be made by 12 October.

The promotion sells roundtrip fares, inclusive of applicable taxes and fuel surcharges, ex-Bangkok, starting at THB25,130 to London and THB27,650 to Manchester in the United Kingdom. Read more

South Laos mulls tourism plan

SALAVAN, 30 September 2015: The four southernmost provinces have drafted a plan to develop and link tourist sites beginning in 2016.

Lao News Agency reported the authorities of Salavan, Champassak, Xekong and Attapeu met at the 8th meeting in Salavan province, late last week, to discuss a joint plan to develop tourist sites in the southern provinces of Laos and link tourist sites via practical routes that travel companies could adopt for their clients.

It is long-term plan covers 10 years up to 2025.

Hanoi opens tourism department

HANOI, 1 October 2015: Hanoi People’s Committee established a Tourism Department, last week, taking over the responsibility from the nationwide Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The department is a specialised agency under the City’s People’s Committee. It is located at No 17 Dien Bien Phu street in Ba Dinh district.

Safety tops Brits travel agenda

LONDON, 30 September 2015: British tourists are becoming increasingly concerned over their personal safety and that of  their families when travelling overseas, according to research by Travelzoo.

The finding should alert tourism officials in Thailand to the danger of lax security and events that create the perception that a country is not a safe holiday destinations.

Two high profile incidents in Thailand should cause concern for those who monitor travel in Thailand; the recent Erawan Shrine bombing in Bangkok and the gruesome murder of two British tourists on Tao Island last year that is now the subject of a high profile trial covered by international media.

AirAsia ramps up flight tracking

PORTLAND, OREGON, 30 September 2015: AirAsia will ramp up its flight safety by equipping its with Panasonic Avionics Corporation’s FlightLink, an aircraft tracking and flight deck communications system.

The deal with Panasonic will include their new AirMap suite of products enabling Aeronautical Operation Control (AOC) fleet communications, management and aircraft tracking.

FlightLink will be initially installed on 90 Airbus A320s to ensure the aircraft will be connected to the airline’s ground operations through their entire flights 24 hours a day.

Phuket’s jet skis stay put

PHUKET, 30 September 2015: Jet ski operators will be free to continue scamming tourists on Phuket beaches this high season, according to a report in yesterday’s Phuket Gazette.

The newspaper quoted Phuket Governor, Nisit Jansomwong, saying jet skis would still be available at specific zones on the island’s popular beaches.

His decision will disappoint the travel industry on the island, which was hoping for a stronger response from the governor to end decades of scams and accidents attributed to the rental of jet skis.

China wins Indonesia rail project

TOKYO, 30 September 2015: Japan said Tuesday its bid to build a major railway in Indonesia had been rejected with China instead to be awarded the project, slamming the decision as “extremely regrettable”.

China and Japan had for months been vying to build a new railway in Indonesia, as Asia’s two biggest economies increasingly battle for influence across the region.

Indonesia had originally invited bids for its first high-speed railway between the capital Jakarta and the mountain-fringed city of Bandung, but unexpectedly changed plans this month and opted instead for a cheaper and slower option on the same route.
