Third world airport to be rebuilt

NEW YORK, 29 July 2015: New York’s LaGuardia Airport, famously likened to a “third world country” by Vice President Joe Biden, is to be rebuilt from the ground up, officials announced Monday.

“We want a globally renowned airport for the next century that is worthy of the name New York,” Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a Manhattan hotel ballroom alongside Biden.

The Guide to Sleeping in Airports rated LaGuardia as the 10th worst airport in the world in 2014, singling out security lines, drab decor, lacklustre cleanliness and unhelpful staff.

Vietjet pioneers Yangon route

HO CHI MINH CITY, 28 July 2015: Vietjet Air will launch flights connecting Ho Chi Minh City to Yangon in Myanmar starting 2 October.

The upcoming route will have five flights per week departing HCMC Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a flight time of two hours and 15 minutes.

The flight will depart from Ho Chi Minh City at 1025 and arrive in Yangon at 1210. The return flight will depart from Yangon at 1300 and arrive in Ho Chi Minh City at 1535. All times are local.

Corrupt travel firms prosper

VIENTIANE, 28 July 2015: Lao Association of Travel Agents has called for the relevant government authorities to strictly enforce the law to rid the country of illegal travel companies and unregistered tour guides.

The association argues that the illegal travel firms do not make a financial contribution to the country in taxes.

Registered travel firms have to factor tax in their costing, while companies that avoid registration evade tax giving them a price advantage. There are also companies that fudge their reporting declaring a smaller total of tourists handled to avoid payments.

TG launches fares for Mom

BANGKOK, 28 July 2015: Thai Airways International launches a “Travel with Mom 2015” promotion for two passengers travelling together on selected domestic routes starting on Mother’s Day, 12 August, to the end of September,  this year.

Mother’s Day is also the birthday of HM the Queen of Thailand and is celebrated as a national holiday.

The promotion sells a one-way fare, inclusive of airport taxes, ex-Bangkok to Chiang Mai, starting at THB1,600.

TG tightens timetable

BANGKOK, 28 July 2015: Thai Airways International has made substantial adjustments to its winter 2015/2016 international schedule for both THAI and THAI Smile services.

The changes were announced by the airline’s president, Charamporn Jotikasthira, following board approval at its 20 July meeting.

The revised timetable identifies increases in services to key destinations in Europe, effective 25 October.

Don Mueang achieves record

BANGKOK, 28 July 2015: Bangkok’s Don Mueang made it into the record books as the world’s largest LCC airport, overtaking Kuala Lumpur International airport, Barcelona and Las Vegas, according to a Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation analysis.

CAPA said Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport saw passenger traffic surge by 50% in the first half of the year, enabling it to become the world’s largest LCC airport.

Don Mueang Airport handled 14.4 million passengers in the first half of the year, representing a staggering 50% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from Airports of Thailand.

AoT invests in Chiang Rai airport

CHIANG RAI, 28 July 2015: Chiang Rai’s airport will undergo a THB300 million upgrade over the next two years in a move to establish this far-north town as a gateway for Chinese tourists.

Around 200 tourism executives and government officials attended a seminar, Monday, at the Dusit Island Resort, that focused on the province’s future in the lucrative Chinese tourism market.

AoT sponsored the event as part of its strategy to improve air connections to Chiang Rai and the Mekong Region by strengthening air transport and tourism relations between China and Thailand.

Losses grow for Air France group

PARIS, 28 July 2015: Air France-KLM said over the weekend it would add a further 300 million euros (USD330 million) to a previously announced 1.5-billion-euro cost-cutting programme as it revealed first-half losses of 619 million euros.

Despite a 5% increase in passenger revenue for the first half of 2015, income from cargo plummeted 81%, the company said.

Tightening competition and the adverse effects of exchange rates also helped drag the airline farther into the red.

Delta buys stake Chinese airline

NEW YORK, 28 July 2015: Delta Air Lines will buy a stake in China Eastern Airlines as the two carriers strengthen their partnership serving the United States and China, the companies announced Monday.

Under a preliminary agreement, Delta will invest USD450 million to acquire a 3.55% stake in China Eastern and will be given an observer seat on the Shanghai-based airline’s board of directors.

The agreement depends on reaching a final marketing deal and approval by each carrier’s board.

Play offs for winter Olympic venue

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 July 2015: Beijing and Almaty on Monday embarked on a frantic final lobbying campaign for the 2022 Winter Olympics ahead of a decision this week on the winner.

High level delegations from China and Kazakhstan are in Kuala Lumpur where the International Olympic Committee will hold a secret ballot on Friday to decide between the two rivals.

The Games are guaranteed to go to Asia for the second time in a row after 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
