Private airline revives

VIENTIANE, 27 February 2015: Lao PDR’s first private airline, Phongsavanh Airlines, will be revived as Lao Central Airlines and resume services after a two-year suspension.

Air Transport World news reported the airline will start service to Luang Prabang and Bangkok in Thailand later this year, from a base in Vientiane.

Launched in late 2011 with two Boeing 737-400s, the airline stopped scheduled flights in December 2013, citing unrest in its key market Thailand as the key reason.

ATTA candidates on election trail

BANGKOK, 27 February 2015: Association of Thai Travel Agents will elect its 36th president and committee on 31 March for a two-year term.

The election will take place at Napalai Ballroom, Dusit Thani Bangkok 1000 to 1300.

The current president Sisdivachr Cheewarattaporn, who has served two terms; 2011 to 2012 and 2013 to 2014, will step down.

AoT: January traffic up

BANGKOK, 27 February 2015: Airports of Thailand reports its January data showing increases in both aircraft movements and passengers at six airports under its management.

AoT released its latest data, Thursday, revealing an improvement of 17.67% at its six airports. They handled 9,519,564 passengers up from 8,089,911 during the same month last year.

The overall airports’ aircraft movements also increased 8.75% from 56,555 to 61,503.

Myanmar cautioned over tourism rush

YANGON, 27 February 2015: Myanmar’s Centre for Responsible Business says some of Myanmar’s flagship sites such as Bagan, Inle and Kyaikhtiyo are already under environmental and social pressure from the negative impacts of tourism.

The Myanmar Times quoted the centre’s survey that claimed tourism has damaged the well-being of local inhabitants and the long-term viability of the tourist attractions has been compromised.

“The number of local and foreign tourists has increased, which has both good and bad effects. We want to increase the positive side and reduce the negative impacts of tourism,” said Daw Thi Thi Thein of the MCRB, who managed the survey.

TripAdvisor celebrates 15

BANGKOK, 27 February 2015: TripAdvisor celebrated its 15-year anniversary, Thursday, claiming it has reached over 200 million reviews and impacts positively on the travel industry’s ability to sell.

TripAdvisor has rapidly grown from its early days above a Needham, Massachusetts pizzeria to become the world’s largest travel site.

The company now spans more than 45 countries and had more than 2.5 billion visits during 2014. TripAdvisor also recently crossed the 200 million reviews and opinions milestone.

Centara manages Phu Quoc resort

BANGKOK, 27 February 2015: Centara Beach Resort & Spa Phu Quoc is the latest Vietnamese property acquired by Centara Hotels & Resorts after a management contract was signed with the owners, Binh Le Xuan Ltd. Companies and Commercial Services.

The four-star resort is Centara’s second property on Phu Quoc Island, and is viewed as a desirable complement to the other properties in Centara’s Vietnamese portfolio.

The group’s vice president of sales and marketing, Chris Bailey, said: “The new resort is a highly desirable acquisition for us, as it has a different style and product focus than our other properties in the region, and so we can expand our appeal to a wider cross-section of the market.”

Minor to open Anantara in Dubai

BANGKOK, 27 February 2015: Minor Hotel Group announced, Wednesday a partnership with Dubai Properties (DP) to develop a new Anantara due to open in Dubai in early 2018.

Anantara Dubai Creek Hotel will be located in Culture Village, a new destination being developed by Dubai Properties Group in the east of the city facing Dubai Creek.

Located on the waterfront and with a contemporary design, the new Anantara hotel will be one of the first luxury hotels in Culture Village.

Thailand to improve travel data

Bangkok, 27 February 2015: Thailand’s travel related research should take a turn for the better now the Tourism Authority of Thailand has enrolled strategic partners.

TAT’s Intelligence Centre (TATIC) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism and Sports; the National Statistical Office of Thailand; Kasikorn Research Centre, and the Bank of Thailand.

TAT governor Thawatchai Arunyik said: “This MOU marks a significant step for the TATIC in to create knowledge generation on Thailand’s tourism industry. Under this MOU, TATIC and the four partners will become a very strong platform representing an innovative research-driven module that will help bolster the country’s tourism growth.”

MUMBAI, 27 February 2015: “2015 Discover Thainess” was core promotional message at the Thailand Trade Investment Tourism Road Show that ends today 27 February, 2015, in Mumbai and Delhi.

Organised by the Thai Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Mumbai, the roadshow created business opportunities for Thai and Indian entrepreneurs.

The Thai delegation was led by Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.
