BANGKOK, 10 August 2010 – The State of Emergency remains necessary to prevent possible terror incitement, particularly during the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday, according to National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Tawin Pleansri.
In a statement to the National News Bureau, Mr Tawin expressed concern over potential violence during the long holiday on the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 78th birthday anniversary, 12 to 15 August.
He stressed the need to retain the Emergency Decree in all 10 provinces as assessed by the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES).
The 10 remaining provinces under the State of Emergency include Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, and Samut Prakan.
The NSC secretary-general continued to say that if the emergency rule was to be revoked, Bangkok would be the last province to be considered.
Mr Tawin, in his capacity as the Secretary-General of the CRES, was told by the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to consider a recommendation that the centre lift the special law in some of the 10 provinces during its meeting today.
