THAI will kiss fuel surcharge goodbye

Thai Airways International will end its fuel surcharge by early 2010, according to executive vice president, Pruet Boobphakam.

“The fuel surcharge is impacting on our competitiveness on the Kangaroo route, (Australia to the UK), so we have decided to include all charges in the advertised fares.”

THAI offices, worldwide, were informed about the new policy, earlier this month, but it will take time to adjust fares throughout the system. The airline claims an inclusive fare policy will be in place across the network at the latest by early 2010.

“It could be sooner if the process is completed before the deadline,” he added. “Earlier the better for us and it makes calculations easier for travel agents, with a higher commission, too. We may need to adjust the commission rate, but at the close of business travel agents will get more than they earn at present.”

This is long overdue. All airlines should practise it. Companies talk about transparency but they do not religiously observe it. As a TG Orchid Plus Gold card member, I applaud TG for this move.

As an agent, this is great news. A pity a lot more airlines have not done the same – congratulations THAI. I look forward to using and booking your services more!
