Chinese museum opens in Suphan Buri

Grand opening ceremony of Dragon Descendants Museum in Suphan Buri set for 24 December.

The Grand opening Ceremony of Dragon Descendants Museum in Suphan Buri Province is set for 24 December while celebrations will contintue until 1 January.

The event will take place at Dragon Descendants Museum, near the shrine of Suphan Buri City pillar.

Located 200 km northwest of from Bangkok, the giant Dragon shaped museum is the newest attraction in a province that is building up its travel related attractions.

It focuses on Chinese history and the migration of Chinese clans to neighbouring countries such as Thailand, where they established successful business empires.

While it has specific interest for Thais who have Chinese descendants it also provides insights into China’s history and relations with neighbouring countries.

Entrance to the museum costs Bt399 for international visitors, Bt299 for Thais and half price for children. It takes about 90 minutes to tour the whole exhibition.  There is an explanatory narration in three languages — Thai Mandarin and English. 

The Dragon statue building which has water splashing from its mouth measures 100 m long, 35 m high and 18 m wide. Inside building, there are 20 rooms that display historical collections and information on Chinese dynasties, literature and traditions dating back 5,000 years. The museum took nearly two years to build.

Dragon Descendants Museum advisor, Weerasak Kowsurat said: “Thai-Chinese citizens in Thailand can learn about their ancestors from the history of each Chinese family clan. The attraction will also appeal to visitors from other such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Indonesia, Chinese migrated over the last three centuries.”

While there are exhibits focusing on mythology and man’s journey through the ages there are more practical exhibits particularly the one tracing the history and varieties of Chinese tea. Some of the rooms are dedicated to the various Chinese dynasties including the famous Zhou Dynasty where Taoism was born, Qin Dynasty which has the world’s famous terracotta warriors, Tang Dynasty when the ancient Silk Road began, and Qing Dynasty which was the last Dynasty in China.

Apart from this new attraction, Suphan Buri is famous for Buffalo Village, Bueng Chawak which has fresh water aquarium, and Wat Pa Lelai which is a very old temple located on the west bank of the river on Malaimaen Road.
